Directory Phone Numbers and Invoices

In the customer profile in the directory, I have entered the phone number as (###) ###-####. When I create an invoice, the invoice input shows the phone number as it appears in the directory. When I preview the completed invoice, the final invoice shows a mark, followed by the country code, followed by the first digit of the area code.
Directory shows
(name redacted)
(phone number redacted)
CSV Directory export shows
(name redacted)
(phone number redacted)
Create/Edit Invoice shows
(name redacted)
(phone number redacted)
Preview Final Invoice shows
(name redacted)
(phone number redacted)
How do I format the phone number properly in the Directory so that the actual number appears in all venues?
