Appointments Feature Request: Disable tipping on items - calculate tip based on cost of service(s)

The title of this post has been edited from the original: Tips should only be calculated on the service part of a sale, not retail

We are a service based business. We provide a service and our customers tip us on that service. But we also sell retail (skincare, lifestyle) items that customers should not tip on.

When our customer comes in for a 90min facial and during check out decides to buy some recommended products also their balance can jump form $130 to $280 very easily. So we now have a $280 balance with services and products, the customer swipes their card and the tip screen suggests a few % options..

Scenario 1, Wrong - 20% tip on total sale

$280 + 20% ($56) gratuity = $336

Scenario 2, Correct - 20% tip on Service only

$130 service + 20% ($26) service gratuity = $156 + $150 retail = $306

Unless we ring an extra transaction to separate retail from service sales, our customer gets ripped off. We make more money, Square makes more money but our customer got ripped off by $30 in Scenario 1.

The solution we previously offered to Square was to let items be "tip(able)" the same way items are currently "tax(able)"

Any thoughts from the Square team?

As a retail shop it is incredibly frustrating to have to explain to literally every customer that buys items only and no services (about 80% only get items) that they shouldn't tip and that the option is put there for services only. It is ethically outrageous and I cannot believe I found this 4 year old thread and Square has been aware for this long and refuses to make the simple change. This is a deal breaker for us too and we will be actively looking for alternatives due to this singular issue.

I concur.  I am additionally dismayed at the concept of when there is a split payment for a service, the final payment allows for the gratuity, but at only the now reduced amount.  I've lost $1,000's in potential tips.

example.  $250 service rendered with a Gift Card in the amount of $200.  Processed through,

the remaining $50 in a Credit Card, leaves the option finally to tip at a percentage only of the remaining $5o.  This means if they were wanting to leave a 20% gratuity for a $250 service, they only leave $10 rather than $50

It's a major issue in the service industry when there are variables with the type of service you are providing, additionally problematic when you add retail to the mix, which should not be tipped on.  This is a major bummer and a definite deal-breaker in the end.

So unfortunate to see how long this issue has been brought to squares attention with no resolution. I will be leaving square this feature causes to many uncomfortable moments with clients I have as a hairstylist.

From what I’ve seen, square doesn’t ever look into any of the issues raised in these threads. I’ve been begging them to fix this along with offering categories for online service menus with online appointment booking. Both seem like pretty easy fixes that less robust POS services offer... no other explanation I can see other than they don’t give a f...

Good morning, I notice that square is also paying tip for Items and not only for Services.

Is there any way of only getting the tip to pay the employee over the services and not Items?

Just because in a situation where someone is doing a service for a few hours and the front desk sells products, the client is giving a tip based on the service and not for products but when I look at the reports, the tip is being shared also for the sale of the product.

This would be considered a feature request at this time, @FND!

I've moved your post over to the thread where others have expressed interest in this feature so that you will receive a notification if we have news to share about this request, as we'll be sure to post here if we do

We've been asking to isolate tipping for services for over 4 years now.  I know I've lost my patience and I'm looking to move to another platform.  Get it together square.

I AGREE!!! How hard can it be? Service industry is a big part of their success. Ridiculous

1000000% agree!!! THIS IS RIDICULOUS THIS HASNT BEEN RESOLVED. IT IS EMBARASSING AND STRESSFUL FOR CLIENTS AND PROVIDERS ALIKE.

DISABLE TIPPING FOR RETAIL. HOW HARD CAN IT BE???? I AM ABOUT TO LEAVE SQUARE IF THIS ISNT RESOLVED SOON.

We've been using Square for 7 years and have complained about same thing, seems like it should be a common sense fix??!!

I've been ringing up retail separately from service, so inconvenient. Or I point out the issue to the client and help them calculate the correct amount. Ridiculous, I agree! and embarrassing.
