Square for Retail: Adding a store credit to a customer

Has there been an update to the Square retail app or gonna be in the future to add a store credit to a customers profile on it? It would so be helpful.

Re: How to give customer store credit/voucher

Trying to give a customer a complementary $25 for hardships.  I have the Advanced Accounting so I can use gift cards.  I would like to use a 100% discount promo code to pay for this gift card but the only option is Paypal or Stripe.  How can I give a customer store credit??

I am so happy you asked this question! I own one of the largest boutique-style resale shops in Washington State and we do not deal with consignment. We do mostly store credit with the items we receive from customers to resale. We are very busy and the extra measures we take to make store credit possible slows the sales process by a few minutes on every transaction and causes many clerical errors with our employees.. I've been adding Store Credit to Gift Cards and reloading them when we get new items in but it makes me nervous because we also sell gift cards to other customers or give them out as marketing tools to gain new customers so adding in excess notes is the only way to differentiate our Store Credit gift cards from regular purchased gift cards 😆and it is confusing when training new employees. It is a lot of extra steps and notes in order to keep administrative paperwork solid in case we ever get audited. I would not suggest it and we are stopping it altogether. It causes too many issues.

A running store credit balance would be a game changer for my store and it would with so many others who deal in Resale which is quickly becoming a billion dollar industry since Gap and Walmart just bought out Thred Up.

I hope it changes very soon and I believe if Square gets enough requests for it, they will reep the rewards from that change in their system and so will their loyal businesses will all jump on board with this option.

It appears others have found ways to work around this but keeping track of running balances with additional notes is a headache and makes more stress and a longer work day for those of us who are very busy.

This says it all

I own a very busy resale store and before I bought it 2 years ago, the old owner kept track of our customer store credit accounts in binders!! 10 years worth of binders and store credit totals. She consistently made six figures with these binders which I adopted upon buying this store. She made very good money doing this and it was all handwritten. I was her employee at the time since my husband brought in our family income and I was just working there for fun.

I went through a divorce and left my husband who provided for our family but I wanted to be independent and on my own! I loved that store and I put my life savings into fixing it up like a boutique and have seen my customer base double.. When I finally decided to go digital with our customers, they were super excited until we started having an issues with them losing their gift cards and all the additional notes we needed to make to keep track of running totals. It happened a lot and my store has since become an absolute nightmare for me to run in this way and adding balances to cards that are constantly getting lost I am sure has cost us old customers and lots of time. I have had 2 employees quit due to the frustration of it and decided to eliminate this altogether and keep track with notes and the trusty old school calculator.. This is not efficient but it is less steps and headache overall. I have cried and racked my brain for a solution and I can't go back to old school paperwork!  I have called customer sercice countless times and begged for solutions & tried countless ways to create an efficient system to keep track of totals and feel I have only lost money and customers over it.

I do not want to get rid of Square but if something doesn't change soon, I might be forced to. THEY cannot possibly think that not offering this option is making them more money. It couldn't possibly.

Resale Stores all over the country would be willing to PAY a monthly fee if they would add this feature and I believe many other businesses would do this too. Add it as an Upgrade option to us & I will buy it. Today.

Resale is a growing industry and one that Square should take notice of. Look at Poshmark, Mercari, Thred Up which was just bought up by Gap and Walmart! This would increase sales exponentially for Square and many other stores would start offering resale accounts with store credit on damaged returns, exchanges or boutiques adding resale sections to their stores.

In this dying pandemic small business economy, Resale is taking over and I hope Square recognizes this soon. I am sticking with them and keeping track of accounts on paper again because I believe they will get on board soon once they FINALLY take notice that other big businesses are doing this already. They need to keep up with the competition or they will struggle when somebody else beats them to it.

100% Agreed.

How do you explain this to an audit or run balances? My customers do not use their Store Credit all at once! So each time they bring in new product, I need to add new notes and reload the card. It's a lot of excess work and creates mistrust and insufficient paperwork.

Square did partner with a consignment company but nobody does consignment anymore! Resale is up and coming and on top of that, their Online options are also built all wrong. We own a brick & mortar resale store AND an online store but I quit doing online items as bulk inventory isn't an option. All these lack of options SLOW busy businesses down and actually cost us more money.

Square seems to only be great for restaurants but for retail, it is hurting my business and holding us back from growth.

Retail-Give us a store credit spreadsheet calculator

Retail Online-Faster downloads & bulk inventory options.

Time=Money and this company is costing retail money and slowing us from growing to our full potential. I would love to sit down with whomever is making decisions for this company and show them what we're doing vs. What we could be doing if they got their shiz together and quit being tight wads.

Someone old must be running the company decisions

It doesn't help our Resale Shop and we deal with almost all store credit since Covid had us shut down for 6 months and can no longer afford to pay Cash Out to our Resale clothing sellers which are also buyers too and this change hasn't stopped them from selling to us.. The clothing is still pouring in and it is nice stuff too..

The issues we have been having trying to deal with Store Credit totals with Square is incredible. Too many issues daily to count and it might cost me business and my reputation as a business owner!!! It is insane trying to make this work on a square system  and keep track of running Store Credit balances and new totals on resale items since reloading the cards os a pain and since half the time the Sellers lose them as they are not used to doing business in this cockamamey way 🤣🤣🤣

1. If they lose the card, it is difficult to find! You are pretty much screwed and losing money.

2. Creates issues on an Audit

3. Requires excess notes on a customer's information and card numbers must be implemented manually to keep track of loss of card.

4. It doesn't automatically keep track of the balance on the customers name.

5. It is a lot of extra notes to add in order to differentiate Credit from an actual Gift Card payment. They are not the same to an auditor.

Clever way to do it and I like where your head is at but the statement of "You're Welcome!!" isn't a big help to every business since all businesses are different and unique. We need a universal solution to this ongoing frustration hellooooooooo

Seriously, a year? I finally do not feel so alone but where is Square and their responses on here?

Don't they care about their customers? If it truly has been a year, I am giving it until mid January while I look for other options.

They will lose a lot of customers next year if they don't change their system

Make the Store Credit option as a tracking process on a running calculated spreadsheet on the cistomers file and add Store Credit and balances to the check out. I am going to keep square and try out a different company to keep us from going under from no option with this. Using Running Store Accounts with Gify Cards is ridulous and insufficient with a lot of extra measures for implementation. I have lost sleep,, revenue,, customers and employees trying to make this work with gift cards which is what the Square representative told me to do.. If I get an audit,, I am holding them accountable for telling me to do this.. it's  NUTS and has almost ruined my Resale Shop.. Pray the customer doesn't lose their card since you cannot track it!!!! 🤣Square is good for restaurants and running reports. Whomever is running the retail end of this company (In Trump voice) should be FIRED!!!

Ethan. Do not go with the Store Credit option in a gift card and when you sell a gift card, please make notes of the numbers because if the customer loses it, it is lost for good and cannot be tracked.

Square is wonderful for everything except-

Store Credit

Implementation of bulk inventory

(This is also an option they need desperately)

They make these fancy complex options for big businesses and are ignoring the needs of small business owners. This is a travesty.

Excel Spreadsheets do not work on Square because we have tried it. You can download a spreadsheet in pdf form to the customers account (which is extra time & work) but it doesn't run calculations or edits! How exactly is this a help to the customer?

Please I beg of your company to train properly and stop telling customers false information or non strategic unresearched "work around" options. I have been trying to be patient but my loyalty to your company is going to ruin my business after a year of ongoing work around options being spoon fed to me for half the day from some guy in Indonesia with his kids in the background.Really guys?  YOU ARE NOT NIKE. THIS FALSE COVER will catch up with your cheap work around options and tank your company by causing a full fledged class action lawsuit. This could cause a lawsuit just like the reps keep telling me to use store credit for gift cards. What in the flying freak is going on? It has almost cost my family our livelihood and 2 employees have quit because of it. I am so annoyed with this, please for the love of humanity, tell us why you are having reps spread information that harms the businesses who use your service & pay you higher than other companies. You are leading the way so you just cut corners and continue to not care about us in comparison to your bank rolls. Ugh. I am so done.

This company is seriously going to get sued by telling customers false information or options that cause auditing problems or u

Huge issues. I  am transferring out a.s.a.p. after reading this false garbage.
