Is there a way to change an uncategorized item to a category after the sale transaction?

I need to change an item that was sold as uncategorized to a category. How can I do that?

Re: Categories

@ruckdmc At this time there isn't a way to go back and change or add a category to a past sale.

In the meantime, you can add your items to categories so that your reports will be accurate in future. After you create a category > go to the Items section of your Dashboard > click on an item > click Category to select your new category.

I am reiterating my suggestion from 2½ years ago that at a minimum you add a merchant-only comment or flag to transactions so that merchants can see when they are balancing their books that a transaction has been incorrectly categorized so that they know to manually adjust it outside of Square.

Of course, a better option would be to allow merchants to change receipts with edit tracking — so that both the incorrectly categorized or uncategorized original selection and the corrected selection show — with reports based on the corrected data.

It's now been 5 years, 3 months, and 1 week since the original request was made.

Hey there 👋

If I am understanding this correctly @Sliderman your request is that we add a way to add notes to past transaction or the ability to edit past transactions?

Both of these might be a bit difficult to perform. The reason being is that being a financial institution we are subject to data time stamps and these cannot be changed once performed.

However we do allow adding notes to transactions before being processed. I apologize for the misunderstanding. We are still looking for ways to make this request possible.

Thank you for your patience.

Another here who really really wants a way to move an item from categorized to a category after the transaction. For all the same reasons other folks have listed. WE NEED THIS! Thank you!

Sorry, meant "uncategorized"
