Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?

Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?

I give my staff a discount on products but I do not want to allow a discount on travel size items.  Is there a way to mark them so they can not be discounted?

Re: How do I restrict all discounts on purchases of alcohol?

It sounds like you would like the ability to restrict specific items from discounts, @burrito 🌯
While this is not currently possible, you are able to select the categories and items that discounts apply to.

  1. I would first recommend creating a category from your Dashboard to house all of your alcoholic beverages in.

  2. Next, you'll create or edit a discount via your Discounts page.
While here, toggle ON the Discount rules option in the Automatic discount section:

  3. You'll want to select the Item or category option in the pop-up that appears here:

  4. Next, you can select all categories that you would like the discount to apply to.
Be sure not to select the category you created for your alcoholic beverages!

Please let us know if this isn't quite what you were looking to do, and we can dig in a bit more

Re: Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?

Hi @salon208 — welcome to the seller community! ✌🏻

Thanks for surfacing this. Currently, we don't offer the option to restrict discounts on specific items, though I can see how this feature would be helpful for many businesses like yours.

I'll be sharing your suggestion with our Product Liaison team, who is constantly working to improve our products based on seller feedback. We'll certainly circle back with any other developments that may be useful.

Please keep in touch for updates and if you have any other questions, let us know!

Count me in on this request.  I don't want my employees to get their discount on certain products that have very low margins.  You've added automatic discounts on specific items, which is part of the way there.

Another feature I'd like to see that would help along these lines, is the option of requiring a password if the item is being sold below cost.

Please can we get this feature implemented ASAP! I really want to move my $1,000,000+ /per year business over to square because of the ease of access and friendly interface but I need discounts to apply to some items but not the whole transaction. My business sells our own manufactured products + 3rd party products that we source from other local businesses. When a club member makes a purchase, they receive 15% off OUR stock excluding 3rd party products. It’s a pain and very inefficient to scan every item, apply the club 15% discount and then go through and manually toggle the discount off the 3rd party products.

yep, still need this feature..... shopkeep has it. just sayin...

How do I create an Employee discount for some of our food items?

Employees get 50% off some categories of food, but not all categories.

Currently, if I create a 50% off discount and add it to a bill, it takes 50% off everything (all food, beer, vodka etc.)

I need the discount to apply only to some items but definitely not all

Hey @CO888- You can check out Valentina's answer on this page where she talks about how to separate employee discounts in our system. Feel free to reach back out with other questions!

@nika this request has been in the queue for years now: how difficult is it to create a feature that exempts certain items from being discounted? It is cumbersome to discount an entire tab, then go back through and remove the discount from certain items OR go through and discount each, individual item one by one.

Since there have been so many requests this, why hasn't anything been done about it? It doesn't seem that Square has the desire to work with its customers to create a better system. I would recommend this system to other businesses in the future if customer service was better. I have used the system for a few years now but am seriously considering a switch to a system that takes requests from its customer base and puts it into motion. Seems that you would want to work with your customers to make the system better.

Hi @jeffw5 - stepping in here for Nika in her absence. Let me provide some context for you, here.

We field thousands of feature requests each week here on the Seller Community, and bringing these features to fruition often takes an ample amount of time and effort from our engineers. We want to ensure that our releases are not just surface level products, but the best all-around resources to help you grow your business.

These requests also span an array of different aspects of our products; some are more major, while some are periphery features. Our Product Teams do have a road-map for future additions to our offering, but the nature of our work includes trial, error, and set-backs. So sharing a timeline would be far from accurate and more than likely cause more confusion and angst.

We want our Sellers to feel empowered to do what is best for their business - and we expect that you will. If you have any other questions in the meantime, don't hesitate to reach out to us directly.

@Joe "We want our Sellers to feel empowered to do what is best for their business - and we expect that you will." reading between the lines, it seems that your Sellers are not high priority and you have no issue with them leaving. I will keep that in mind in the future. Thanks.

Hi Ashley.  I read your suggestion however that is not a suitable solution for us.

Here is my scenario.  We sell houseplants, pottery, and gifts.  Sometimes we offer discounts on "all plants" or "all pottery".  That is very easy to do with the square system, as I simply select the category of pottery or plants and the discount is automatically applied.  Super easy!

The problem lies when I want to exclude specific things.  For example we are running a mother's day sale right now on All Plants, EXCEPT Rare Plants.  I wish there was a way to uncheck specific plants.   When you check a category, it checks every item in that category but it locks you from deselecting specific items in that list.

That would be a most welcome addition to Square!  Thank!

Hi there, @SarahCotta 👋Stepping in for Ashley on this one in her absence.

This definitely makes sense - and you are correct, this currently does seem to be a limitation, automatically removing the category discount from specific rare plant items would currently be a Feature Request.

While a specific resolution may not be in place, there is a slight workaround that may work here: you could create a temporary category for the rare plants, that way theses items would be protected from appearing as discounted to your customers. While this option may not be ideal as a workaround, it could temporarily solve the problem for you.
