Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?

I give my staff a discount on products but I do not want to allow a discount on travel size items.  Is there a way to mark them so they can not be discounted?

It sounds like you would like the ability to restrict specific items from discounts, @burrito 🌯 
While this is not currently possible, you are able to select the categories and items that discounts apply to.
 

  1. I would first recommend creating a category from your Dashboard to house all of your alcoholic beverages in.
     
  2. Next, you'll create or edit a discount via your Discounts page.
    While here, toggle ON the Discount rules option in the Automatic discount section:


     
  3. You'll want to select the Item or category option in the pop-up that appears here:


     
  4. Next, you can select all categories that you would like the discount to apply to.
    Be sure not to select the category you created for your alcoholic beverages!

 

Please let us know if this isn't quite what you were looking to do, and we can dig in a bit more

Thanks for surfacing this. Currently, we don't offer the option to restrict discounts on specific items, though I can see how this feature would be helpful for many businesses like yours.

Just commenting to see if any progress has been made on this. We need the ability to NOT discount specific items, as human error is too big, and every cent counts right now...

I just started with Square and we had our first open day yesterday. We were having trouble with discounts. On some tickets I had the option to click on an item and turn a discount on, but some I did not? Is this because I saved the ticket and couldn't edit the item any longer? 

Also, non-discount button on items when you're creating them would be AMAZING!

Were you logged in as the account owner, or an employee when filtering through these transactions?

I need this to be available for me too.

IE:  I do not want alcohol that I sell to have any discounts applied.  Please advise.

So we consign items in our gift shop that we don't give ANY discount on ever. We also do not discount food and beverage.

 

Members get a 10% discount on all other items.

Volunteers get a 10% discount on all other items

Staff get a 20% discount on all other items.

 

Everyone else pays full price on everything.

 

We are having to do two transactions when a staff member buys consignment and regular items at the same time. And we've lost money from people discounting consignment items when they should not have.

And thank you for providing some business-specific context - always super helpful.

When I was a store manager, the companies I worked for didn't have systems that were able to identify which items should and shouldn't be discounted. Employee discounts always had to be applied manually, and in some cases I had to run two separate transactions: 1 for the items to which the full 40% employee discount applied, and 1 for items to which only a 20% employee discount was applicable. 

 

I also remember staff members making mistakes when discounting items! 😓Always tricky - my best bit of advice here is to train staff on best practices when ringing up items so that they know when to discount and when to charge full price. At this time, this is still considered a feature request, but we will be sure to post an update if this is built out.

Your client base has been requesting this feature for years now. If I recall correctly the first request was in 2016?  I am in the same boat. I would like to have a few items NOT available to be discounted. Can we get a reply please? Better yet, can this feature be added? I would think it would be the same process as the tax toggle. Page 14 in this convo is from 2020 and it appears there are no replies to anyone!

Hello, Seller Community! I am reaching out today to see if anyone knows if I am able to disable the discount option on certain retail items? Or if there is a way to not make an item discount eligible in general because most of the time, items are thrown in a cart together and we just do a general discount.

Hi @hilltophardware! Thanks for posting. 🙂 We do offer automatic discounts that I think may fit what you're looking for. You won't be able to exclude it from certain items, but it can automatically apply to specific items either grouped together or during specific time frames. 

 

You can create a limited time discount for instances like seasonal sales.

To do so:

  1. Visit Items > Discounts in your online Square Dashboard.
  2. Click Create New Discount.
  3. Enter the discount details.
  4. Toggle on Automatic Discount. Choose either Item or Category or Quantity > Done.
  5. Click Add eligible items of categories to apply discounts to certain items or categories automatically.
  6. Toggle on Set Date Range and select dates to create a limited time discount.
  7. Click Save.
