Feature Request: Customize category icons, and add photos to categories like items

Feature Request: Customize category icons, and add photos to categories like items

The title of this post has been edited from the original: Can you apply pictures for categories?

Would LOVE to be able to add a picture to each Category I create. I see we can add a picture for items but not for categories. Could you send a request for a future update for this? Would make our Square Register screen so much nicer and prettier. Thank you.

Re: Pictures for Categories

Hello @ryanwnzl

I know this thread has been around the sun a couple of times now. I've gone ahead and reached out to our Item Library Product Manager for an update. Currently this request is on the backlog and we're not expecting it to be implemented anytime soon. I understand this isn't the answer a lot of sellers want to hear, but I want to be as transparent as possible.

There are a lot of factors that come into play when prioritizing feature requests - comments like all of yours on this thread are one of the big inputs our product teams take into consideration. However, there are other things to consider as well -  build time, engineering bandwidth, and cost to name a few, as well as balancing this request with others that may take up time from the same engineering group.

I know there are 8 pages of comments about this issue, and it is a lot. Some of these factors like engineering bandwidth are less visible to you all, which is why I wanted to give a little insight into some of the behind-the-scenes work.

Thank you for your patience, and understanding - our eng teams are working on other features that we hope make POS even better for you. If we have updates on this thread, we'll post them here. All of you who have commented are already subscribed, and anyone new to the thread can click the "Subscribe" link on the first page.

I was trying to edit my quick labels which are currently Items, Discounts, Customers, and Saved carts to have one for Categories and I can across this from 2017 which showed an image as a Category for Drinks.  Any Idea How they did that then but now we can not do it?  This is from an instruction thing for editing Categories.  here is the link :

I agree this would be great as having a quick small image to the clerk what is in the category since i use the category for different sized candles.... 2x3's   2x6's  3x3's size appearance of Jars etc.  Sometimes labels fall off or are taken off so the scanner has nothing to read and a Categories quick link would be helpful or even letting us add a Category as a Favorite instead of only items as a favorite.

I'm having the same issue and wondering how this is still not solved after 5 years??

Square is too busy investing in BitCoin and hanging out with Jay Z these days.  They don't seem to have time to get around to software requests that have been ongoing for half a decade or more! 😂 I guess they assume it doesn't cost them money, and for us right now they are correct, but we just reached a 1000 items in the Square system so these minor inconveniences are quickly moving to deal breakers that will have us looking into other options soon.

In one of your tutorials it shows an ICON of a GIF? possibly image for the Drinks Category which was dated 2017, now it is 2021 and still no update?  here is Squares steps for this topic which shows the Category for Drinks changing to a Gold background with an image of a Drink, but nothing explaining how to put the drink image in.

This really makes me question my choice of going with Square.  They have time to play with bitcoin investments that lose stockholders money, but no time to keep up with requests on what is supposed to be their core business.

@Candlestore I just wanted to note that the drinks image shown in the tutorial is an emoji, so still text based.

i would also love this as a feature request, as I have one of a kind jewelry all categorized by shape and size, so an image of the blank shape would be most beneficial.

Yeah... still waiting for this...

Also wanting this feature.

You can specify a Category Image when defining a site category. It looks like that image is used only when looking at the the list of site categories when editing the web site. Why not do the the following within category pages shown to the user: if the user selects a category which has no items assigned to it, then display the category image as un-selectable (un-clickable) content on the web page?
