Feature Request: Customize category icons, and add photos to categories like items

The title of this post has been edited from the original: Can you apply pictures for categories?

Would LOVE to be able to add a picture to each Category I create. I see we can add a picture for items but not for categories. Could you send a request for a future update for this? Would make our Square Register screen so much nicer and prettier. Thank you.

I know this thread has been around the sun a couple of times now. I've gone ahead and reached out to our Item Library Product Manager for an update. Currently this request is on the backlog and we're not expecting it to be implemented anytime soon. I understand this isn't the answer a lot of sellers want to hear, but I want to be as transparent as possible.

There are a lot of factors that come into play when prioritizing feature requests - comments like all of yours on this thread are one of the big inputs our product teams take into consideration. However, there are other things to consider as well -  build time, engineering bandwidth, and cost to name a few, as well as balancing this request with others that may take up time from the same engineering group.

I know there are 8 pages of comments about this issue, and it is a lot. Some of these factors like engineering bandwidth are less visible to you all, which is why I wanted to give a little insight into some of the behind-the-scenes work.

Thank you for your patience, and understanding - our eng teams are working on other features that we hope make POS even better for you. If we have updates on this thread, we'll post them here. I know there has been a thread regarding this from a few years ago.

Not sure what happened the thread just stopped.

Adding pictures to categories like you can the items would be a great way to improve staff productivity. 

During a rush and even for new staff it's much easier for them to navigate around the product categories and find items if they can easily distinguish the products.

As of currently you can change the category color and even add an emoji which worked for us for a while, until it didn't make sense any more.

A great solution that I think a lot of users would still be interested in is having the ability to set our own category images like we can items.

But, even fetching the product image of the first or only item in a category and setting it as a default for the category image would be helpful.

Hope there could be some feedback on this topic

Just received and unboxed our new Square "Register".  This was one of the first things we needed to do.  We are currently looking at a bland grey screen to add items to a cart.  We have close to 600 items on our website and on the Square system with a LOT more to add.  We need to be able to add category images or at least eliminate the stupid two letter square icons that don't tell you anything.  Sub Categories is still high on our wish list as well.  I'm still trying to get around that confusion between our website and in store sales.

Good luck Brandon.  I've been attacked on here for trying to get an answer/implementation date on this type of feature.

We've had no update, close to a year since making a request and this feature request has been running for 6+ years.

It's incredibly poor.

Been asking for this for years. My guess is they want you to upgrade to their full blown pos software for 60 bucks a month.

About the only way I would upgrade to software that I have to pay for in addition to the money we already make them via processing, and invoices is if it worked better with my WooCommerce based website. The whole thing works really well for the current cost, but a couple of tweaks would eliminate these final problems that we have to use work arounds for on a daily basis.  I would be willing to pay for that.

I've not heard about any "full blown POS software" for "60 bucks a month" but this is all starting to make sense now.
