Feature Request: Tips on services only with Square Appointments

Feature Request: Tips on services only with Square Appointments

I am a hairstylist and have a small studio suite. Why does tip calculate on total rather than just the service amount. Last night when checking someone out who had services, retail plus taxes it calculated the tip off everything not just the service. This makes no sense and it needs to be fixed. Please help.

Re: Feature Request Tips on services only

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this @Dogs

I don't have anything new to report around this, but I can see how it would help for businesses that sell items as well as services that deserve a tip.

If anything new comes along, I'll post an update here.

I want the tipping feature to be applied to individual items, like the taxes are. A single toggle-switch. It is embarrassing that customers are prompted to tip on retail items. This is really important to a lot of us. As Square began with small service-providers like hair stylists and estheticians, I am amazed this is still an issue. I have always enjoyed that Square addressed our unique needs, with the exception of this one issue. It makes clients feel like we're asking for tips on a larger amount. We never want our clients to distrust us.  I have contacted support a few times and contacted their FB page too. I am really hoping this is resolved immediately.  With the ability to apply taxes with a toggle on/off, it seems to me that the technology is already there.

This is absolutely still needed! Not sure where else to chime in. Square any progress on this? Your system needs this change. Your service related businesses are losing money and time on these transactions.

Any updates on this? We are about ready to pull the trigger on completing migrating our three salons to Square, but the more I dig into the feature requests, the more deal breakers we get.

This would be extremely useful for service type businesses. Please upvote this!

In Clover, there is an easy option to exclude products from the tip calculation.

Thanks for the feedback, we do appreciate it. Right now the best work around is two sales, one for the service and one for the rest if the recommended tipping option is not calculating correctly for you.

You can turn off Smart Tipping- which calculates the tip for you, so that the tipping they add is only added on the total they choose. A lot of Salons have gone with that option.

We are happy to pass this feedback. I can see where this would be immensely helpful for your business and we make changes based on this kind of feedback.

Has there been any developments on this thread.

I would like my clients to be able to tip for their grooming service only not on the retail too, not the total purchase.

Thank You

Hey! There are no updates as of yet - we are still tracking this feature request. Keep posting though as it helps us understand what sellers are asking for most. Thank you!

Please please move forward with this feature. It is the reason I left square last year. I'm a salon owner and it was embarrassing to have a ticket for $75 for service and $200 for products and the tip gets calculated for $275!!! We should NEVER expect people to tip on products!!! that's ridiculous. my clients complained and would have to use a calculator or have me calculate the tip for them... but the reality is we shouldn't even be having a conversation about tipping--it should be the customer's choice and should be a silent one... instead, I would have to warn them "just so you know, this system applies the tip to the entire purchase, your service today was $75, so if you would like to tip, please be aware of that."

it is so silly to have this conversation, and VERY awkward. please update!

Agree with all these comments! This is an embarrassing and unprofessional work around! Please Square fix this issue.

This reply was created from merging an existing thread: Tips not being separated from service vs. retail

I’m frustrated that Square does not separate Services from Retail products for tipping. I’m an Esthetician, so it’s extremely awkward for me and confusing to clients after receiving a relaxing facial, to have to hear my explanation, to use the custom tip amount and do the math based on the service.

Has anyone found a way around this without ringing things up separately? And why hasn’t Square responded to this issue when so many are using them in the salon spa industry?

@KELLY81 I'm adding your post to this thread where we're tracking this request and so we can notify you of any updates from the Appointments team!

In the meantime, as a workaround, some sellers are ringing up two separate transactions so that clients can add a tip to the transaction for the service only. Others are doing what you've been doing which is calculating the tip based on the service separately and I can absolutely see could cause friction.

I really appreciate your patience with this. We'll post here if we have any developments to share.
