Hey i was wondering if i can put down a debit card instead of a credit card on file for the customer if they don't have tap on their card? (I'm from Canada) and if not does anyone know how i can accept chip debit cards?

I don't know about keeping a debit card on file in Canada but I'm going to guess no, but maybe @katieand can shed more light on the subject.
As for taking chip debit cards, that currently isn't possible with the deal Square was able to get with the debit card providers in Canada. So you'll have to stick with tapping $100 or less Interac Flash Debit cards for now.

I'm happy to let you know that yes you can use card on file in Canada.
- You can use card on file with the Point of Sale app to save and charge credit cards in the app.
- Or you can use card on file with Virtual Terminal, or with Square Invoices to charge credit cards and co-branded Visa and Mastercard debit cards, which are processed as credit card payments.
You wouldn't be able to use an Interac Flash debit card with card on file; to accept Interac debit cards you must to tap the card on the reader.
