Variable Price Items for an Online Store

Why can't I let my customer enter a variable price for an item online?

"Variable priced items cannot be sold online. Add at least one variation with a fixed price before selling this item online."  - Why?

To be clear, if you have a variable price item in your point of sale you enter the price when you ring it up.  Example: A pastry item you made 3 of for the day...you decide to charge 3.99 each..tomorrow you make a pastry you charge 1.99 for it but you call the item pastry of the day etc.

Online the customer can't enter the price you have to set the price.  You can use item variations to set what prices can be used.  I.e. 1 blue widget is 2.99....next variation...2 blue widgets is 4.99...3 blue widgets 5.99 etc. and so on.

You could also have the item be a cup of coffee..and use modifiers to charge for addons.  Base price is 1.99  add milk .50  add syrup  .50 etc. and so on.

I hope this helps you.  If not give the community an idea of the item you are selling and how you sell it.

"Online the customer can't enter the price you have to set the price."  Why?

I send 400 customers who pre-registered different prices for their yearly tuition through an automated email process. The customers all hit the email same link back to Square and manually enter the amount specified in the email.   Instead of me having to create 100 Items OR create 100 variation on the same Item.

PayPal lets you do it

Hi there, @LouGalli - thanks for taking the time to write in here on the Seller Community!

Variably priced items for the Online Store is still considered a Feature Request at the moment. While I don't have a specific timeline to share for development and launch, I am passing this thread over to our Product Teams for further evaluation of what our Sellers are asking for.

In the meantime, have you leveraged sending your customers an Invoice? Invoices would give you the ability to send your custom price tuition requests to each of your customers to pay individually online directly through email in lieu of visiting an Online Store.

But you don't allow your customers to bulk upload invoices. So I have to manually enter 400+ invoices for my customers for next month.?  That will take forever. That's another one of my open questions.

And things sit on your enhancement "request" list for years.  MANY of your customers requested manual form entry fields to collect customer information on checkout.  We have been waiting on this for 3+ years. That's another one of my open questions.

I am either going to have to use your API to build my own processing screens OR download all my data, load into mySQL or another DB and link everything across together based on customer key.

Your customers should not have to ETL their own data. You should do it for us.

@LouGalli Did you ever find a workaround to allow your online customers to enter in a pre-negotiated amount for a single Item? I'm facing the same issue. Surprised that this isn't a default feature enabled by an on/off toggle.

I also would love to see variable weight pricing online be available. I am a farmer and we sell beef, but by law it has to be sold by weight. I'm aware I could invoice my customers, but it would be better for them to have the option to order what they want, and put a card on file to be charged once I am able to update the weight for their requested items.

I love to find a workaround we have a farm and we sell by weight. I have to try to do a set price for a deposit and then charge them at pick up but the inventory is different.
