Taking partial payment but keeping ticket open

Scenario: Bar ticket is $1,000.  One of the patrons is leaving and wants to pay half the open ticket.  Can I process $500 payment on this person's card and still keep the ticket open and keep charging things on it?  Last time I did this I just kept the screen open until someone paid the remainder on it.  I was afraid to push any more buttons!

I don't believe you will be able to do a payment like that and keep the tab running. once you start the payment you can split it as you did but you won't be able to go back to running a tab and then paying off more later.
