Open Tickets "Swipe Customer's Payment Card"

In the How To for " Payments & Sales" - Use Open Tickets with Square (https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/5337)

It states:

Create a new ticket during a sale

  1. Add items or custom amounts to the sale > tap Save.
  2. Tap New Ticket or swipe the customer’s payment card to create a new ticket.
  3. Enter the ticket information > tap Save.

I cannot figure out how to get a card to swipe during the create a new ticket in open tickets as it discribes above.

Any help is apprecaited!

Thank you,

I just tried it and it worked just like described.  I hit tickets and swiped and it auto-populated the name. I also hit tickets then new ticket and swiped and it auto-populated the name.

I'm not sure what we are doing wrong then as it is just not working for us. We are using iPads, and I've tried both the swiper as well as the chip reader.

Hey @innisbrook - Is this for every card that you have attempted or just a specific card that you're testing?

@innisbrook, I would recommend calling in to support and see if they can help troubleshoot it in realtime with you.  it works every time for me on like 8 cards I tried, though in the end it really isn't that worthwhile of a step as all it is doing is capturing the customer's name to be displayed on the ticket and not holding the payment information.  it might simply be faster to ask a name rather than have the customer have to dig out their credit card just to get their name added to the bill.

You'll need your customer code to call.  Follow the instructions below on how to get it.

https://squareup.com/help/contact

Click “More”

Click "I don't see my issue"

Click "Call Support"

Write down your Customer Code

Call 1  855  700  6000

Depending on your specific account, you might not have phone support available, or you might have limited hours of support. If your account doesn't have phone support, Email is the only way to communicate so that there is proper documentation of the conversations.

if you have a smartphone you can program the phone number with the code into your phone so it will be there next time, store it like this

1  855  700  6000,,xxxxxxxxxxxx. (your code goes where the xs are)(remove the spaces in the phone number).  The commas tell the phone to wait 3 seconds each and will automatically enter it for you.  Once you set this up one time it is there for all future needs and you won't have to go get your code again.

Thank you for your help! I was hoping that this allowed for the card number to be saved to their customer profile/open ticket. That is unfortunate that it doesn't have this capability.

Yes, @innisbrook Square doesn't have the capability of capturing card information at the moment. This is something quite a few merchants have been leaning on Square to resolve for a bit. Hopefully it's coming soon...?

Right now, your best bet is to use the Card on File option if you're not in a busy environment. You can create the customer, assign the card number to that customer, and then link the customer to the open ticket. Obviously if you're hopping you don't have time for all the extra steps. We're just using the ol' card in a box trick right now. Definitely not ideal 😞

yes, that would be great if it did.  unfortunately, for now, that ability isn't part of Square.  Hopefully, it is something that is coming "soon" as many people really want it.

Note:  If you use a customer’s credit card to create a new open ticket, the card will not be charged at that time and their payment information will not be stored within the app.
