Hello @mercedeshise thanks for your post, I'm sorry you're having trouble with this. Do you have sales tax setup for your online store? Go to your Dashboard > Online > Settings > Sales Tax. See if you have sales tax set up here.

https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/6878-all-about-taxes-square-online-store

Also check: https://squareup.com/dashboard/business/manual-taxes

This area in your Dashboard also contains a tax setting. Make sure this is set up.

When you are testing your website, make sure that you go as far into the checkout process to include a shipping address. If you don't input a shipping address you will not see the sales tax show up in that field. If you have your sales tax setup for your state, and you're testing with an address within your state, you should see the sales tax show up.

Let me first say I AM NOT a tax professional, but there is a general rule that if your business has no physical location or connection to a particular state, then you do not need to collect the sales tax for shipments to that state. But you need to collect state sales tax for each state that your business has a physical location within. So it looks like you are based in Illinois, so you'd setup the Square Online sales tax rate for whatever your State of IL charges. You'll need to setup an account with your State's Dept of Tax Collection or Tax Revenue office, and ask them how to remit those sales tax payments to your state.

I hope this helps answer your question.

Yes taxes show up but only in my state, I see people tax to every state and it is not letting me. I don't want to lose a lot of money come tax time.

Hello @mercedeshise

In order to charge sales tax on every state you would have to use Manual Taxes instead of automatic. I recommend reaching out to a Tax Professional so they can offer advice in regards to your Sales Tax business needs.

Hi there, @mercedeshise - Violet here, stepping in for @JJ_ while he's out of the office.

To disable the automatic tax calculation, you'll need to go to your Square Online Dashboard and then to Shared Settings on the left. From this expanded menu, you'll click on Sales Taxes. On the Sales Taxes page, you'll see an Edit link on the right and then you'll uncheck the "automatically calculate taxes" option in the popup box and then save.

I hope this information is helpful but please do let us know if you have any additional questions.

@mercedeshise ;

If your business is located in more than one state, you would need to collect sales taxes in each state you operate your business.  If you only have a physical location in 1 state, that is the State you collect taxes for.  Bigger Businesses that have a location in every state need to collect for those states too.  Now some online sites such as Amazon may charge sales taxes to small businesses for sales in every state since Amazon might be doing the distribution and has warehouses in every state.   Before changing your tax settings talk to an accountant and ask them if you need to charge taxes in every state.  If you start taxing people Sales tax for say PA when your in CA, you would have to send in those collected taxes to PA at tax time and every other state you collected sales tax for.  Tax time for sales tax for me is Monthly because of the sales volume we do in a month.  Now again since everyone's taxes and situation is unique as others and I have said talk to an accountant first.  This will keep you from causing a problem and may relieve you feelings of owing taxes when you actually do not on sales tax for other states.
