How to add item cost in Square Retail

I apoligize if this is an dumb question.

I have read every forum post on cost for items/inventory but am unable to figure it out.

I don't see a place to add cost on the item page.

Disclaimer - I'm a newbie but here's what I've seen so far:  It isn't on the item page.

It's on the inventory management page (but I only see this online through the dashboard, not in the point of sale or square for retail app.) - see screenshot of my menu bar.

Once you click Inventory management, click on the item you want to input cost for.  Then you'll click on "adjust stock."  If you select stock received, it lets you set how many of the items you have, and you can input the cost.

The only other ways I've found to do it are both on the same inventory management page.  You can create a purchase order or use the import item cost tool (which works like the import items feature.)

I wish the developers could make this more easily accessible through the Items page, and I wish you could use it through the apps.  It's pretty tedious right now.

But maybe there is something I have missed??

Hello @yachtandhome and @BluePelicanOBX

This is a bit tricky, but @BluePelicanOBX hit the nail on the head. The flow described above is how you add cost to items in Square Retail. I do see how we could maybe cut out some steps if this function was avalible under the Item tab. I will make sure to pass this feedback along to our product team.

If either of you have feedback on Square Retail we would love to hear it, so feel free to bring any suggestions forward!

There is a great article in the Support Center on the Inventory Plus feature. This article is great for getting started.

If either of you still have questions please let me know. 😀

Yes, it would be handy if you could add the cost in when you set up the item.  Thanks!

Hi... I'm trying to get my inventory input but I can't seem to figure out how to get to the place that is being described here. The "Inventory Management" button does not show up on my dashboard. Could you provide some instruction?

Thanks

Hey @HedgeRichards - Just to clarify, are you using Square for Retail or just Square Point of Sale?

Yes, that would be super helpful to have that.  Right now, as a substitute, I am using the SKU to input cost so I can easily run a Profit and Loss on sales each day.  But then I constantly get the error message saying I have duplicate SKU's.  Seems this would be a fairly simple fix, and I feel confident your amazing team of programmers can get this little piece of extremely helpful information added to the Item setup and susequently the daily sales report.

Thank you for your post @winelady! I'm sorry you've had to deal with that error message. 😕

I will share your experience with the Retail team - it will help them to make improvements! If there are any updates to adding the cost in future we'll let everyone in this thread know.

Hi all! Following up - I know it's been years since the original post, but is there a way to add the cost per item using general Square, not just Square for Retail? Our current plan isn't under Square for Retail. Thanks!

If you use Square POS, you can add the cost there while you add the item. I use square POS and square online. Personally I think adding items is quicker and easier on the POS side than the online side, the item will sync to square online, except you will still have to go to square online just to add the item to a category. A simple thing like categories does not sync between them. Below is a photo of the unit cost on the POS side.
