I am a new Square user and I am frustrated with the help function and Square Communities not having accessable answers to some basic questions I have on using the system.
1. How do I track cash in my till? I do not need a fancy automated drawer but I need a start of shift and end of shift total so we can balance it our every day.
2. How do I pay out and account for tips that were paid by credit card? Alan Silver Bell Winery

Awesome question! I'm so glad you asked, and I do apologize for the delay in getting back to you.
To get going, you can manage your cash drawer with the Square app on an iPad or Android tablet. You have the ability to "Open" and "Close" your cash drawer to check balances when you'd like. For more details, here is a link to our Support Center article that lays out how to get this set up.
As for your second question, Square doesn't have an official recommendation for the best way for tipping out employees. It really comes down to what works best for your individual business. Some merchants will tip their employees out each evening using cash. You have the ability to record "Pay Outs" using Cash Drawer Management (that's explained in the article referenced above). You can also view employee sales (including tips) from the Square Dashboard's Employee Sales report. Using this, you could pay tips out according to your regular pay schedule, and then just include this amount.
Hope this helps! Don't hesitate to add any other questions. I'm happy to clarify.

Thank you for your reply. How do you account for amount of taxes on tips that need to be reported?

@JoyCafe You'll want to speak with a Tax Advisor in regards to the best way to go about reporting this information.
You can use your Sales Summary Report to view the tips and taxes accepted to help out with this.

My employees log their Credit Card Tips amount into a little calendar book (though I think using an app on the iPad would be better since the calendar book could easily be lost) and they take that amount in cash at the end of their shift each day. Then the person working the next shift knows that their own tips are the total Tips in the Reports for the day, minus the prior employee(s) amount(s) listed on the calendar. People's shifts / clock ins don't always reflect that they were the one working the counter at that time, so I can't rely on looking at timeframes and calculating tips with payroll. However, this means the business pays the fee on their credit card tips, but I am not going to sweat that, cuz whatever, tips aren't that much at my business (coffee). If it's a big deal at your business, though, you could have them deduct that percentage as well when they cash out CC tips. If they can't do maths, tell them to take 97 cents on the dollar. (;

The tips reporting is a major issue with Square. I am doing what you guys are doing and I dont understand how Square can not think of something like this and in addition have NO SIMPLE solution. It is confusing for staff and lots errors get made.
Square is great but we are contemplating changing to another system just for this.

I'm with you FGSF. I just started using Square after having used Aldelo for 5 years. Aldelo is much more advanced and detailed but I like the mobileness and simplicity of Square. This tips issue is really bothering me already after the first night though. It's a very simple programming issue that could be fixed very quickly. When the employee is doing the cash out (End Drawer) at the end of their shift, all Square would have to do is import the tips for that empoyee into the End Drawer report and deduct it from the Cash Expected. Most POS systems will also let the administrator choose whether or not to deduct the processing fee out of the tips as well. Very simple to fix for them and I hope it gets done very quickly or we may be moving away from this system very soon also. Come on Square, help resolve this simple issue!

How do you appropriately record the difference in the deposit? If employees are taking their credit card tips out of the cash drawer, on paper it would appear as though the deposit is short.

Its a simple formula CASH COLLECTED - TIPS = DROP
I do a blind drop so they dont know how much to drop to check up on how accurate they are.
I built a custom report based on time since we close at 2am. Send me a private message with your email and i can send you the screen shot. Somehow I can't attach images on the forum. It took me a while to figure the easy way to grab the info so hopefully this saves you time!

@FGSF I don't see any way to send you a private message. But I'd love to see that report you mentioned. We close late as well, and cash out/tip procedures have me confused/concerned. And I'm only one day in!! Here's my email if you don't mind. scoopdevilledelivers@gmail.com
Thanks!!

I assume you already have Cash Management turned on, and an active cash drawer in your Square Register.
To record the credit card tips paid to employees out of the cash drawer, you would use the Paid In/Out option. In your Register, go to Reports > Current Drawer. Tap Paid Out. Enter the cash amount being withdrawn from the drawer and a description (e.g., "CC Tipout: John").
Tap to Confirm Paid Out.
Any withdrawal entered through the Paid Out option will appear in the drawer history on the iPad, with both the description you enter and the total amount in the drawer.
If you happen to run into a situation in which you do not have enough cash in the drawer, but you happen to have enough petty cash secured somewhere else. You can use the Paid In function to add cash to the drawer and then complete the Paid Out process to pay the employee cash tips and maintain the record of the transaction.

@gelpresso Yes, it will. When the drawer is closed out, the drawer report will reflect any cash you paid in or out of that drawer. It will also be saved in the history.

This doesnt work. The end of shift report under an employees login, is not matching the device report. Ive run reports for staff and the tip total does not match the report that can be run for all sales/tips on that same device as a total for the day. how is that possible? Two servers sharing a device run their own end of shift reports - their totals dont match the sales/tip report for that device. some thing is wrong

Hello @koyakitchen I am sorry you are having issues with your reporting not matching up! In order to determine what is going on we will need to look at those reports and the device and team settings. For account security, we cannot discuss those things here. Please reach out to support and let them know this is going on. You can reach support at 1-855-700-6000 squ.re/contactsqsupport.
I hope this gets resolved. If you need anything else let me know.

We print each servers shift report which shows what they owe the house or what they get in a paid out. Just cash in hand less credit cards tips is what they receive. They have their own bank so it doesn’t affect the drawer. This is a problem though because the drawer keeps track of all cash so it thinks all cash that day should be in the final drawer count. Haven’t figured out how to handle that yet. Any advice Sean.

Hi @Salado456
Can you provide more details on your exact setup and work flow? While there's not a specific recommendation that we can make for this, more details might allow one of your fellow sellers to chime in with the workaround that they use for something similar.

Wanting to double check that their is NOT an option for cash tip reporting?
That the only way to split tips between employees is having an employee collect a tip for a sale, under their own passcode?

Hi @Riviere158 and welcome to the Community!
I added your post to a relevant thread in our Community about tip reporting. You can view tips collected in the Sales Report but in order to know how to disperse the tips by employee, you'd need them under Team Management Plus to view sales by employee instead of all together.
