How can I use barcodes to point to an option instead of an entire item?
I run an independent garden center & my goal for this season is to improve efficiency at the POS by adding bluetooth barcode scanners. I'm using Square's print labels feature & suggested scanners, so all that seems to be working just fine.
The problem I'm having is that regardless of whether I'm using SKUs or GTIN to generate the barcodes, they always point to an entire item (i.e. Petunias) versus the options within the item (i.e. 4" container, flat, assorted colors, etc.). Using a barcode to find Petunias does not help me with the desired efficiency. Since we are also a grower, I need accurate analytics to track how many we produced of each variety & compare it to the number sold or damaged out at the end of the season, so tracking these options is a must.
Any advice? Everything has unique SKUs and or GTINs since you can't have duplicates in Square anyway, so I'm just frustrated why the barcode only directs to the item as a whole. For example, if I was selling a style of t-shirt, how do I get the barcode to register whether I'm selling a S, M, or L? Thanks!

Heya @beesonsnursery,
If an item is a true "variation" in Square's system with a unique SKU, scanning it should automatically put that individual item into the cart.
We may need to take a closer look at your setup here to better assist. Please reach out to our direct team when you get a chance here.
