How can I adjust my printer settings for my Online Orders so they automatically print?

[The title of this thread has been edited from the original: Online Order Receipt - Printing Issue]

I can't seem to figure out which settings on my receipt printer to adjust. I want to automatically print online orders, but only print in-store orders if the customer wants a receipt.

Thanks so much! The setting were a little different for Register for anyone else trouble shooting. Settings > Print Orders toggled on that option as well as Printer Settings > Print Order Tickets

Hi @fcmarket and welcome to the Seller Community. Thank you for trying all of those steps. I've merged your post to another thread where @barkshopbakery was able to get their Square Register to print new online orders. Let me know if those steps work for you!

if i can add a question please: does the printer print your on line orders automatically to the correct printer or do you have to see the order and tell it to print?

Online orders will automatically print to the selected printer configured in your Printer Station settings.

Make sure to enable Online order tickets under the Use this printer for option. Then toggle on Automatically Print New Orders.

Do you know if this works with Square for Restaurants and the register? We are using an e-commerce integration for our online ordering but orders do not print automatically. We have to select the order and print the ticket as well as confirm the order in this step. Would be a huge help to automate this specific step.

Yes, automatic order printing is available with Square Restaurants using the Register. What e-com integration are you using?

I am trying to get this all straightened out. Our Square iPad POS used to get an alert when a new online order came in, AND would automatically print the order on the receipt printer. Now that no longer happens. No onscreen alert, no printed ticket. Is this due to a change in the software? I have not found any configuration under settings that will fix this. Do I need square for restaurants? Do I need square for retail? We are a pie bakery. We take orders online, on the phone, and in the store. We need a solution that will allow us to take orders on the phone and in person, and have them show up in the order system. Not a saved ticket. We also need that order to print out on our kitchen printer.

Hey @Tom_Herman!

Thanks for posting in the Seller Community. Sorry to hear that your online orders aren't coming through the app.

Have you adjusted your settings at all? Did you update or delete the app?

I would ensure that your settings follow these instructions. Let us know if this issue continues, as I can imagine it's frustrating.

I think I have sorted out my problem. We have a retail store, and sell at 5 farmers markets, which are set as locations. The online ordering is currently set up to take orders ONLY for the farmers markets. We were hoping that these orders would print from our POS in the retail store. This is not the case. The orders for each one I guess will only print at each location, which do not have a POS or printer.

I think I can solve this by setting it all up a only one location, and offering "delivery" to the markets. But I cannot figure out a way to offer delivery to only 5 addresses.

Or not use delivery, maybe put instructions in the Pickup Settings for market pickup.

Any other solutions?

A little out of my depth on this one since I don’t use online myself but I believe you can set delivery as “ local pickup” only instead of shipping and then select which location they need to pick up at. Again I am only going by what I have been following since I don’t personally use it but it would solve your problem

That is the way it is currently set up. The problem is that once you have someone ordering for a farmers market "location", the order goes to that location, not the main store. The order is not sent to our store POS and does not print on the store printer. I get an email about the order, but it does not include the customer name, etc. I can go to my orders page online and see all of the orders for all of the locations. I can print the order with all of its info. But what I need is a real-time notification, and a ticket to put on the rail of orders to be filled.

The main problem is we are not a restaurant, we are a pie store. Our orders tend to be 2-5 days in the future. A KDS would be fun, but we really need a simple hard copy ticket arranged by days on a rail. We have a rail for "this week", one for "next week" , and one for further in the future. We have a lot of online orders, and a lot of phone in orders. We need the POS, or register, or whatever, to allow us to put an order into the system along side the online orders. And then print the ticket(s). Once copy for the counter workers, one copy for the kitchen. We have a kitchen printer. One of the problems with the Square configuration is that in order to get tickets printed to the kitchen we have to set it that every ticket gets printed there. That is the only way to get "saved tickets" to the kitchen printer.  The counter person takes an order and puts it into saved tickets with notes for when it is due, name, etc. Then prints it. Kitchen gets a copy, they keep a copy. When we get tired of having all the regular transaction tickets getting printed in the kitchen, we turn that off and have the counter person walk copies of tickets to the kitchen. But saved tickets do not show up on the orders screen...aaaarrrrgggghhh

The core issue is that Square keeps orders siloed into their respective locations. Since the farmer’s market is a separate location there’s no way to get those orders to print off from a device that is signed into your main store location.

However, there is a good workaround for this. If you have a wireless (ethernet) printer then you could set up another device (phone or tablet) at your main store with the Square POS app that’s signed into the farmer’s market location. You can link the device to the wireless printer and have it automatically print out tickets when an order is placed for farmer’s market pickup.

I did this with an old iPhone earlier in the pandemic. I have my store split into two locations, though one location was just for shipping orders. I downloaded Square onto my old iPhone, signed into my shipping location, then set it up to print tickets from the same printer as my primary location.

*Edit* Thinking this over, the main problem with this is that you have 4 farmers markets so you would need 4 devices, each signed into a different location.

This Is as great workaround. But we have 5 farmers markets..... I am thinking of taking some old iPads and tablets and setting each one up for each of the markets, then using the network to send all of their orders to the same printers as the main POS, the receipt printer and the kitchen printer. Onscreen notification isn't that important, as long as we get a ticket printed. We can look at all the orders via the onlline orders page. Now, if there were just a decent report screen available.....

Are these orders coming in prior to the farmers' markets or during?

If prior you can prep them and make sure the person for that market takes the orders with them.

If they are during the market, they should pop up on the phone of the market staff.

These are prior orders so we know we have what they want at the market. Some of our pies are special order. But we also need to make sure we hold product for the person. We have all of the old samsung tablets we used to use at the markets. They never worked wirelessly with the contactless card readers, so they are just sitting around now. I will try them to slve this problem.

If these are processed prior to the market will payment be taken when they pick it up? If so then you can create a ticket in Square POS for the staff member that works that market, they open the ticket and take payment.
