How can I accept international credit cards? Zip code keeps declining.

I live in US, my customer lives in Canada. I've entered all her info correctly. But it keeps saying declined verify zipcode.. which I have 5 times.

Hi everyone!

While you can accept International Cards, you will need all of the information to be 100% correct. If you're receiving an incorrect ZIP or Postal Code message, you'll need to have your customer verify this information with their bank.

When you enter card information in manually, we cross-reference the information to what the bank has on file. If any of that information comes back as incorrect, the payment will decline.

In regards to @VanKalkerFarms comment, if your Square account was created in the United States, but you're traveling to a different country like Canada, you would not be able to process payments, as you can only process payments in the country that you activated your account in. We do not have cross-border functionality even though Canada is one of our supported countries.

@Arie  thanks so much for getting back to me! Client is in Australia and I was running her cc  info from here. Turns out she just didn’t have enough funds in her bank account. Everything ended up working fine all she had to do was transfer some money into her account 🙂 false alarm and thanks so much for your quick response.

I live in Canada - Canadian citizen.  I need to be able to do the following:

1) Accept Canadian and International Credit Cards while located in Canada.

2) Accept US and International Credit Cards while located in the US.

According to the article about international credit cards, if I want to process cards while in the US, I have to create a second account with a US location.  So I did that. (I even have a US bank account at a US bank.) However I get stuck at the account verification.  It requires a SSN.  Since I'm Canadian, I don't have a SSN (we have SINs in Canada). I spoke with a lady at the help desk and she said that I can't do account verification for the US account without a SSN.  It would seem that I have to get an SSN in order to process cards while in the US. Is there any way for me to process credit cards when I am located in the US without a SSN?

@kpt This thread has a bit more information that might clear things up.

In regards to creating a U.S. account, there is no way to create a U.S. based Square Account without a Social Security Number unfortunately.

I am a US Square customer, and I sell to Canadian cards all the time. Try manual entry, and put ZIP code as 11111. It goes through 95% of the time.

The canadian card (postal info) I was given today by a customer has 6 digits - how do I input that if there is only 5 digits available on the app for postal code/zip code?

Hi @RonV - Have you attempted to @tobint's tip above? You would only need to enter 5 digits to bypass it.

Thanks for the response. We are about to open our Online Store to sell registrations to a seminar here in Florida for Canadian visitors. Will they be able to register and pay in advance from Canada?

Hi @dokoskc

It might be best if they register through an invoice or a Virtual Terminal payment. Have you tried using those payment methods for registration?

I need to know what they are “ordering” to be able to send them an invoice. No way to do that.

@dokoskc I see what you mean.

While customers can use international credit cards to make purchases through a Square seller Online Store, the order must be placed in the U.S.

I always use my Square Online Store when I am traveling outside the U.S., since the card-swipe and chip reader do not function outside the U.S. (although there's no technical reason why this should not be: other merchant-support providers offer international sales support, usually for an extra fee).

I put one version of the item into the Store marked for "Pickup" at my U.S. location, which forces Squre to treat the transaction as happening in the United States, even if the card is from another country, and I and the purchaser are standing in another country.

I bring my laptop with me, call up my Online Store, and ask purchasers to key their credit-card info manually for the "Pickup" item. Once they get to the confirmation screen, I can e-mail them the receipt, and the sale is done. This means no higher manual-entry fee from Square, by the way.

Happy selling, y'all!

Tom

As an FYI, I live in California and process cards from Canada, Japan and Europe often. I remember reading in here someplace to use 00000 or 11111 as the zip. It has always worked for me as long as it is a card normally accepted by Square... MC , Visa etc...

I am in a similar situation and curious if this matter has been resolved. We are using the Online Store to sell registrations to a martial arts seminar we are holding. We are in Florida and our guests live in Canada. Can they purchase registrations using our online store using a credit card from Canada, and using the zip code "11111" suggested?

The issue has been resolved! My guests from Canada are now able to use their credit card at the online Square store using their Canadian postal code (rather than U.S. zip code). Thanks Square!

This reply created from merging an existing thread: "how do i manually enter UK billing zip code?" The author has been notified via email.

I have a UK based client and they gave me cc authorization to bill for services.

Their billing zip is W140EE, how the heck do I enter that manually?
