yes, the free reader will read swiped credit cards that have chips on them, but you will be liable for credit card fraud if it turns out to be a fake card. read more here. https://www.sellercommunity.com/t5/Questions-How-To/Why-Invest-in-a-Chip-Card-Reader/m-p/34529#M1738...

Why aren't you giving a free card reader that reads chips. I use Pay Anywhere and I have one from them free of charge and blue tooth as well. I was considering switching to Square to combine with my online Godaddy store until I realized I'd have to pay for your chip hardware.
Stripe and Paypal have my online business and Pay Anywhere has my mobile business.
Wouldn't it be worth it for you to give free chip readers? I'd love to have one payment processor!
I hope you'll re-think this,
Leigh

Hey @bodiesbyleigh - Thanks for reaching out here!
While we currently don't offer the Contactless + Chip Reader for free, you are able to get it at a discounted price if you refer a friend to Square. Once they've set up their account, they'll receive $1,000 in free processing and you'll have the choice to either receive free processing as well or $20 off a Contactless reader.
In the meantime, I'll pass on your feedback to our Hardware team!

Hey there @mzfiber - I see this is your first post in the Seller Community so I'd like to officially welcome you!
Our free magstripe reader does not allow you to insert chip cards, you can only swipe. In order to read chip cards you would need to use the Contactless Chip Reader or another one of the hardware devices.
If you have any further questions let me know!
