Can I migrate Square gift cards from my account to another Square account?

[The title of this thread has been edited from the original: CAN SQUARE GIFT CARDS BE USED BY ANOTHER SQUARE SYSTEM?]

 

My wife and I are selling the restaurant lock stock and barrel. when the new owner starts his own account using the square registers will the gift cards we have can he sell them?

Our Support Team has a way of migrating gift cards from one Square seller to another. They will need to verify some information from you, and them via phone.

 

I would suggest contacting our Support Team when you officially sell the business and are prepared to migrate current gift cards to the new Square account. Thanks again for posting!

Does that mean that the new owner can also redeem the gift cards previously sold by former owner?

If you contact support and can get them transferred to the new account they will be.  Good luck.

That you link to contacting our Support Team on this question and it's not at all clear how to go about this is just one of the many reasons why I don't know if I'll ever consider Square again for another one of my businesses.  Square is so great when there are no issues, but if you have an issue...   good lord it's impossible to find answers / get help.  The entire process of transferring a business with you all is unacceptable.

I would like to know how to do this as well: migrate current Square gift cards to new Square account.  Sold the business, new owner wants to keep everything the same.  I've called multiple times to square support and have gotten both YES, NO PROBLEM and NO, NOT POSSIBLE for an answer.  Is there a specific department or person I should ask for?  I see on a different thread that it's possible to transfer non-square gift cards to a square system.  Please help.

Sorry to hear about the conflicting advice you've received!

Gift cards can actually be migrated between Square accounts, for example when a business has been sold, or you created a new Square account for another reason. You'd have to let our team know both account you'd like to transfer the gift cards to, and from, and from then it should be pretty straight forward. Unfortunately, we're not able to take actions on accounts via this public forum, but reach out to us here when you get a chance so we can get the gift cards transferred over to the new account 🙂

I called today and was told that it was not possible. Can you advise which department I need to speak to? I was put on hold for at least 30 minutes and was told it was not possible to migrate gift cards from one account to another. I also agree, square is great until you need some help and then it is impossible to get a straight answer. Not to mention being transferred over and over again to another person who still can't give me an answer.

Hi @rlsmith7379 - Thanks for reaching out to us here on the Square Seller Community to bring this to our attention. I'm sorry to hear about your experience with our Support Team.

We do have a process for exporting gift card PANs, but this must be done over the phone so our team can confirm some security information before proceeding. This process is usually done for Sellers who are leaving Square to move to another payment processor and still want to honor the value of any gift cards that customers purchased through Square. I believe once the gift card PANs have been exported from your first Square account, they should be able to be imported into the new Square account using the file that you can download from your Square Dashboard. This will be available to you once our team completes the process from their end over the phone.

Again, unfortunately, this is something we cannot do via the Seller Community so we would need to get you in touch with our Support Team again to complete this. If it helps, feel free to share my post with whoever you're working with if you happen to run into any trouble or pushback again.
