I bought it only for this reason, so I can accept debit cards. Some debit cards dont have tap option,so how am I gonna accept payments???

I received a phone call back. I didn't have the chip reader paired with the app. Then, when you click on charge and it brings up the method of payment screen, there is a line that reads "Contactless". Click on that and it starts the procedure. I tried with a President's Choice debit card and a CIBC Visa. They both worked!

Hi @bkeichinger, I'm moving your post to this thread so you can read Tom's reply on page 1. If it's possible to accept a debit card by inserting it to the reader in future we'll update this thread to let everyone now.

For now you can only accept Interac enabled debit cards for payments up to $100 using the tap function of the reader.

So...  considering this was first brought to Squares attention 16 months ago, and it sells its contactless/chip reader in Canada on being able to insert cards, I feel rather mislead as to the services that Square can provide.

I have clients who have debit cards that do not have a tap ability. This inability for the system accept inserted chip yet take contactless tap is utterly baffling to me. Could somebody at Square please explain why it is taking over 16 months to provide a complete service, @Helen ? Perhaps somebody from the implementation team, if one exists. Basically something other than "we will let you know if the situation changes" which seems to have been the answer so far.

Thanks

I too bought this system based on the understanding that ALL methods of payment would be accepted. This feels to me like false adverstising. With so many people complaining, perhaps we can open a class action lawsuit for the profit losses the intentionally misleading advertising has cost us!

A class action lawsuit - Americans usually respond to lawyers . How do we go about opening  a class action lawsuit because Square has falsely advertised a POS system that does not fully function in the canadian monetary banking industry . Let’s talk more about this . I am frustrated that my clients can only pay with credit cards because my sales are most frequently over $100 canadian dollars .

Not that this is a solution but have you guys used the split amount feature to divide it in half so your client just has to use tap twice or 3 times? It's inconvenient but works

i tried all options, even the split option. but consider this, i wanted to pay can$2104.40. split it in 21 payments? could pay with creditcard too, about the same money for square instead a single fee o 10 cents they'd get can$2.10.

So it has been 2 weeks and no comment from @Helen, or any other moderator, in regards to my request for greater clarity.

@Trinity66, Interac Flash tap payments is a specific industry standard, not something that Square made up, and has the $100 limitation put in by the association that developed the Flash Tap payment method.  Square cannot override the amount that is limited by the payment type.  the Interac Flash tap debit limitations are explained in many places on Square's site including, but not limited to...

 https://squareup.com/ca/pricing

 https://squareup.com/ca/townsquare/debit-is-here

https://squareup.com/ca/guides/interac-debit

https://squareup.com/help/ca/en/article/5085-accepted-cards

you cannot split a $300 transaction into 3 split payments of $100 and use the same card.

personally, I'd be happy if I could process $100 tap debit for 10¢ as that costs $2.75 to do a debit card here in the US.

Hi, I don't think anyone wants Square to over write the Flash tap protocol.

We just want to be able to accept ALL valid debit cards and be able to insert them for amount greater than $100.

Every time a payment gets refused we appologize to the customer explaining it is a system limitation. It is ennoying and embarassing...

So, now we tell the customers to send email transfers or bring a check and make the deposit on the spot with a smartphone. Both methods are free, just a bit inconvinient to write a check in 2019 because someone can't or does not want to fix a problem that exists for 2 years now.

This still seems to be an issue. I can have customers pay by inserting/ tapping credit cards but if they want to pay with debit they have to tap. It's getting more and more common that people are disabling tap from their debit cards as well. Can we please get a fix for this?
