Can I purchase my first square at a local store?

Yes. All Square hardware is independent of your account.

I know I've seen the Square Stand (which comes with a contactless reader automatically nowadays) available for sale at my local Sam's Club, and I've seen the headphone jack swipers in a lot of other stores.

More specialized products like the Square Register or Square Terminal would have to be purchased from the Square website, though.
