Improvement to check-out flow: skip choose payment method page

Hi there,

I'm a super happy Square user – thanks for having built such a great system!

However, I do find it a bit annoying that I have to first push 'Charge' and then 'Okay' (or whatever it says) when sending an order from the iPad to the Terminal. I get that you need to define which payment method you want to use if you've got more than one, but it slows down service having to push two buttons and seeing two screens rather than one for every purchase (it's a detail, I know, but this is the kind of detail that makes all the difference in terms of experience and efficiency.

Would it be possible to make it optional to skip the choose payment method page somehow even though you're using more than one payment method? I guess it could be that you automatically progress to the default card payment method, but once you're there you can then change the payment method even though it has already been initiated – just an idea! Alternatively it could be that you chose the payment method before you progress away from the cart/basket page. That's what Zettle has done; with Zettle you choose the payment method of choice when you push 'Charge' and that works really well. Here you can see what I mean:

To give you a bit of context; I take card payments 99% of the time, but there is the odd occasion where someone hasn't got a card and for those times it's good to be able to take cash (or a gift card). I therefore cannot disable cash or gift card payments completely, which I believe is currently the only way of skipping the choose your payment method page.

I hope you'll consider a more effecient check-out flow and many thanks for having read and considered my feedback!

Hey @skafte, thank you for your post! Before I share your feature suggestion with the appropriate team, I just want to make sure I fully understand the desired workflow so the team can have a better understanding of the issue at hand.

When you mention sending an order from the iPad to the Terminal, is this when you are connecting the iPad to the Terminal as a customer display or when you're saving the sale as an open ticket on the iPad, before opening it and process the sales independently from the Terminal?

If it's the first scenario, are you looking to have it set up so when the Terminal is connected, customers are automatically prompted to pay by card instead of you having to select the Square Terminal under the payment methods?

If it's the second scenario, you can go into Settings > Checkout > Payment types on the Terminal itself and make sure that Skip Payment Selection is toggled on. This means customers will automatically be prompted to tap or insert their card when you press checkout, and you'd need to cancel the transaction in order to select other payment methods.

Hi there @tranguyen, many thanks for your response!

It's the first scenario I'm talking about, where you are connecting the iPad to the Terminal as a customer display.

In regards to this question:

"If it's the first scenario, are you looking to have it set up so when the Terminal is connected, customers are automatically prompted to pay by card instead of you having to select the Square Terminal under the payment methods?"

Yes, that is correct. However, it would be great if it was possible to achieve this in a way that would mean that you wouldn't have to completely disable other payment methods (ie. cash payments and gift card payments). 99% of the time we take card payments and so it would be great if we didn't have to spend time on every sale to first view the payment methods page and then pick the one we want to use. As previously mentioned Zettle has worked their way around this issue in a clever way I think; they've simply replaced the 'Charge' button with a 'Card' button and added an 'All payment methods' button next to it (please see screenshot above).

Hope that's all clear. If not, let me know.

Many thanks!
