Q&A with the Cash App Pay product team: Ask us anything about Cash App Pay on Point of Sale!

Hello Seller Community!

We were thrilled to welcome Cash App Pay’s Global Product Lead, @deep, and Global Merchant Product Marketing Lead, @pcuttica, to answer your questions and hear your feedback about accepting Cash App Pay on Square Point of Sale on October 3, 2023. (Note: We’re planning a separate product Q&A for Cash App Pay and Square Online in the future!).

Here’s a bit more context from @pcuttica:

In late 2021, we launched an update giving Square sellers the ability to accept Cash App Pay as a method of payment on both Square Point of Sale and Square Online. Since then, we’ve seen hundreds of thousands of sellers accept payments via Cash App Pay — whether that be through Square Register, Square Stand, or simply through the Square Point of Sale app on sellers’ mobile devices.

Recently, we updated the checkout flow on Square Stand so that the Cash App Pay QR code is persistently displayed alongside the NFC tap and CC chip reader, offering seamless payment flexibility for your buyers and allowing them to pay you the same way they're already paying their friends — via Cash App!

Did you know that Cash App is the #1 finance app in the App Store and fastest growing digital wallet? Tap into the embedded commerce and shopping behavior of the 54 million monthly transacting actives who rely on Cash App to send, spend, and save their money.

By accepting Cash App Pay, not only are you providing additional payment flexibility to your buyers, but you’re also reducing checkout friction by facilitating fast, simple, contactless in-person payments from your point of sale. And the best part, there’s no complicated pricing to process Cash App Pay — just the standard processing rate of 2.6% + 10 cents (card present) or 2.9% + 30 cents (card not present). Plus, Cash App uses the same fraud detection infrastructure and safety standards that monitor millions of daily Square Point of Sale transactions. Cash App also assumes liability for consumer fraud (as covered by Regulation E, exclusions apply.).

Hello Everyone,

Thanks again for taking the time to share your questions and feedback! We hope your questions were answered — the insights you shared will help us as we continue to iterate based on your experience.

As we close out this event, we wanted to do a recap on three themes that came up frequently:

First, several of you asked about the overall benefits of accepting Cash App Pay. We believe there are several, but to summarize: Cash App is the #1 finance app in the AppStore and is very popular amongst millennial and gen-z audiences, including teens. By accepting Cash App Pay at your business, you are enabling customers to pay the same way they're already paying their friends, with Cash App. And, our seamless integration allows you to keep it all synced on your Square Point of Sale for reporting and operational purposes. Payment flexibility is paramount to meeting customers where they are, and we believe it is in the interest of sellers to accept modern and emerging payment methods like Cash App Pay that allow their customers to pay the way they want.

Second, we heard many questions about the basics of how Cash App Pay works with Square Point of Sale—everything from how to get set up and how much it costs to how we handle disputes. So, here’s a quick run down of those details (also, you can read all about this in the Accept Payments with Cash App Pay article):

  • Availability: Cash App Pay is currently available for businesses processing payments on Square Register, Square Stand, Square Terminal, Square Online, Square Appointments, Square for Retail, Square Invoices and the Square Point of Sale app for iOS and Android devices. It is not available through Square for Restaurants at this time, but we hope to change this soon.

  • Rates: There’s no complicated pricing to process Cash App Pay payments — just our standard transparent processing rate of 2.6% + 10¢ (for card-present transactions) or 2.9% + 30¢ (for card-not-present transactions). If you have a custom processing rate on your Square account, you’ll continue to process Cash App payments at that rate.

  • Reporting: All payments completed via Cash App will be reflected as the Cash App tender type in your sales reports. Cash App payments will appear in reports found through your online Square Dashboard and the mobile Reports applet on POS.

  • Refunds: Cash App Pay transactions originating from the stored balance in the app will be refunded to the customer’s Cash App account balance. Cash App Pay transactions originating from a linked debit card or bank account will be refunded to the original card or bank account.

  • Disputes & fraud: Cash App provides sellers with consumer fraud protection. If it’s determined that consumer fraud has occurred, Cash App will take on 100% liability for this and sellers will not be charged.

  • Transfers: Payments received via Cash App Pay through your Square Point of Sale are treated the same as other “card present” payment transactions, be that via credit card, debit card, etc. Your options for transferring that money into your bank account are the same as well. You can learn more about transfer options with Square in this article.

Finally, we heard several questions about interesting use cases beyond Square Point of Sale. Here are some tips and examples for how Cash App Pay can be used outside of the physical checkout experience on Square Point of Sale:

  • Square Online: Cash App Pay also integrates with Square Online stores. Customers who visit the desktop version of your Square Online site can checkout using Cash App Pay. They will be prompted to scan a QR code on their computer screen in the same way they would at your Square POS. If your customer is buying from your mobile site and has Cash App installed, they'll simply tap a Cash App button during checkout to start paying.

  • Square Online Checkout Links: @Purselady asked about accepting Cash App Pay over the phone and @WNCCatMuseum asked about an interesting use case involving Cash App Pay to collect fundraising donations. In both instances, Cash App Pay via Square’s Online Checkout Links would get the job done! It’s simple and easy to set up—and it allows you to accept payments for things like donations, deposits, classes, and more. This article from the Square Support Center has really detailed instructions plus a helpful video.

  • Square Invoices: Most recently, we launched an integration with Square Invoices that allows sellers to send customers an invoice with Cash App as a payment option. This new integration gives your customers a quick and easy way to pay outstanding invoices directly from their Cash App accounts, and lets you continue to manage your business tracking and reporting within Square Invoices.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences and we'll continue to improve Square’s products based on your business needs.

Again, thanks for your participation. For the latest updates, keep watch for announcements of new features in Product Updates.

How hard will it be if a customer tries to dispute the charge?

How can we protect ourselves from scammers saying we now take cash app? That's why we don't take venmo.

This is a great option, like affirm. It definitely could work now that I'll be offering higher end services. Does the payment goes straight through cashapp and then processed by square? I ask because they are two separate accounts for me, eventhough it's owned by the same company.

Hi there @Empresselan, thanks for the question. You actually do not need Cash App yourself, as a business, to accept payments via Cash App Pay. This integration allows your customers to pay you using their Cash App accounts. You, as the business, are accepting the Cash App Pay payment via your Square Point of Sale system. You can learn more about this in the Accept Payments with Cash App Pay article here.

How do you print a QR for cash app customers to scan?

Hi @jcarpenter.  The QR code is different for each transaction.  If you have enabled pay by Cash app on your POS, click on Cash App Pay when the customer is ready to check out and the QR code will display.  They can scan it from your POS screen and pay it from their device.

I hope that helps.

Hi there, @Svanity96. While this doesn’t include a video, there is a ton of great information in the Accept Payments with Cash App Pay article which breaks down, in detail, how Cash App Pay works across all the Square devices/POS apps that Cash App Pay is currently available for processing payments, including: Square Register, Square Stand, Square Terminal, Square Online, Square Appointments , Square for Retail, Square Invoices and the Square Point of Sale app for iOS and Android devices. There is also a section detailing the Customer Experience at checkout.. Take a look at that article!

Is the team considering expanding options for Cash App pay or even regular pay by printing the QR code on receipts? For example, at a sit-down restaurant like my group of locations, servers typically print the receipts and bring to the table. Having a QR code on the receipt for them to pay, even if it was only via Cash App, would be an added benefit. Our restaurant customers cannot use this option right now because we do want to have them walk over to a POS station.

Great suggestion, @nsilvialafrance! This is definitely something we’re exploring and keen to support. Our team is open to putting the Cash App QR on receipts but we also want to ensure the QR can be inclusive of all payment methods accepted at SQ so all customers can benefit and not just Cash App customers.

This is the most confusing site/chat/whatever.  All I see are questions we the people ask, but I don’t see any answers. All I can figure out is “reply under Tom. It doesn’t make any sense!
