Meet the Device Experience team: How can we help you better manage your devices?

Happy New Year, Sellers!

On Tuesday, January 18th, our Device Experience team hosted a Q&A focused on sellers' needs with device monitoring. Topics covered related to: Square Card Readers, Square Stand, Square Register, Square Terminal, printers, scales, scanners, and cash drawers.

We've got exciting plans this year that will help you monitor device connectivity, battery status, and logins from a single hub within the online Square Dashboard. We can't share out specific details on our product roadmaps, though we will certainly make sure all of the feedback that came through on this thread is incorporated into the decision making process.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you again for taking the time to weigh in with your questions and feedback! The experiences you shared will help us as we continue to iterate going forward. As we close out this thread, we wanted to do a recap on the themes that came up frequently:

  • Device Monitoring and Management - Sellers want to view information like device ID, connectivity status, software version history, upcoming hardware launches, and information on outdated hardware. They would also like to configure network settings and update app versions remotely. There was also feedback on making these features available on mobile in addition to the online Square Dashboard on desktop.

  • Peripheral Support - Sellers asked for new peripheral support such as external keyboard, mouse, stylus pen, as well as additional cost effective printer brands and support for desktop printers from Point of Sale. Sellers who are set up with Square for Restaurants asked for integration with temperature monitoring systems in their kitchen.

  • Remarkable Device Experience - Sellers asked for multiple device support on card readers, network enabled communications, and recommending wifi boosters when internet connection is consistently poor.

  • Hardware Feature Enhancement - Ability to extend screen timeout and ability to insert card face up and down on Register, iPad pro support on Stand, and a line busting app on Square Terminal.

We did receive a variety of questions and feedback on Square for Retail, Appointments, and Square for Restaurants apps — as well as feature requests for inventory and order management. If you asked for a feature that does not exist today or identified issues, we passed along your feedback internally to the respective product teams. We take seller feedback very seriously and are assessing feasibility and priority.

For those of you who are having device issues including battery issues, please contact the Customer Success team.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences and we'll continue to make improvements based on your business needs. For the latest updates, subscribe to Product Updates and you'll receive notifications of our newest features.

Hi @Thevoiceofbeaut,

If you are using Square Point of Sale app, you can disable passcodes by:

  • From the navigation menu, tap More.
  • Tap Settings > Security > Passcodes.
  • Toggle off Allow Team Passcode.

Hope this helps get you where you need to be!

Hey team, I will give you my wish list in no particular order:

1.  Device Management/setup from the dashboard like the restaurants app.  (Ability to dictate the point of sale options like open tickets, use quick actions, screen timeout, etc from the dashboard attached to a device code).

2.  Apple Business Manager Device Roll out integration...ability to configure even network settings from a dashboard with square in mind.

3.  Handheld ordering..terminal is almost there, but need something that can be that "line buster" with card swipe built in.

4.  Ability to print to a network printer like an HP or Brother.

5.  Temperature monitoring system with bluetooth built into the system!!!  Restaurants got refrigeration and would be great to have built in to square.

6.  Keyboard support built into the square stand usb/when you need to type the onscreen keyboard is just slower.

7.  Network enabled communications to cut down on "cloud lag" like with the KDS system.  Restaurants are fast paced and seconds add up.  5 seconds per order for 200 orders is almost 17 minutes a day waiting on an order to pop up somewhere.

Donnie - research Sensorpush - not associated with them - but utilize in 2 units - track multiple cooler/freezer units for reasonable one time expense.

@xyz I have been using jolt and it is a very strong robust system wifi enabled with charts graphs etc.  I can pretty much watch a compressor going bad.  Do I need all that?  probably not, I really just want a "Hey your cooler is over 42 degrees for 1 hour"..I think with the restaurants app this would be a great hardware add that could go through the square app as part of monitoring your restaurant.  Its a bit specific, but I am pushing for square to integrate as much of the systems that I use into their ecosystem so I don't have 20 different apps etc.

I will research them though, because jolt isn't cheap and I no longer use their timekeeping function in favor of square team management.

@Donnie-M 5.  Temperature monitoring system with Bluetooth built into the system!!!  Restaurants got refrigeration and would be great to have built into Square. That's is exactly what I need, temperature monitoring in the Square App.

Hi @Donnie-M,

Lots of great feedback here! Appreciate your thoughtful response.

We are actively working on some of the above like #3.

We launched AirPrint support on iOS last week, which enables us to support all AirPrint enabled receipt/kitchen printers. Brother QL series printers support AirPrint, so we do support this model now on iOS devices. Check it out and let us know what you think.

A followup on #5, is there a popular temperature monitoring system used at restaurants?

Stores with multiple locations and devices need to be able to manage device settings and get software version history. Would be nice if we could get hardware serial number stored online with device ID. Device status to make sure it has online connectivity is nice when trying to see if the store has any issues or processing nfc or EMV payments. Customer displays are the about 90% of my RMA issues.

Hi @irmg,

Thanks for the feedback and sharing how important this particularly with businesses that have multiple locations. We will keep this in mind as we design the solution.

My Retail app opened like always, but the screen went blank.  I cannot check any of my customers out.  The bar code scanner works, but nothing appears on the screen.

I have tried deleting the app but it warns me that I will delete all my data stored on the app (?).
I’ve tried closing the app, but there is no pull down menus from which I can choose to close, nothing. I think it may be running in the background since I cannot close the app.

I am at a loss as to what to do!  And I can not find a telephone number which would allow me to call and talk to someone.  Very frustrating .

When I took this last payment I had to add the 3.5% from the previous payment I took from this customer and the 3.5% from this payment so I get charged more in finance charges because the amount is higher.  How do I take a payment plus add the finance charges without getting charged more.  Plus the extra .15.

you can not charge more and not get charged for that, it doesn't work like that.  Visa/MasterCard/etc don't care if it is an item, a tip, shipping, or a box fee, an add-on fee, or a use fee. To them, it is all just money being handled thru their network and will be charged fees.  If somehow additional fees didn't get charged fees on credit cards then everyone would sell $100 items for $1 and have a $99 addon fee so processing was only charged on the $1.

I think you are referring to service charges if so you have to manually enter that in you web portal to have the option on your terminal.  I don't know why square doesn't let you enter these in on your terminal, register or android app. But you can enter it on you web portal and once its entered there you can then see it on your terminal, register or android app and then tap it and add it to customer invoice.

I have percentage service charges for certain things to help cover cost of fees that are incurred.

hope this helps

Our square terminal runs out of battery just about every day to every few days and we barely use it since we have the square stand/iPad. Charger is working fine as it charges fully. Is there a way to replace the battery or send it in to be replaced? Thanks!

We currently have one Square Reader for IPhone.  We would like to have another  one for an Android phone if possible.

I think we might be asking for a USB-C card reader..I personally would pick up the contactless reader and just manually enter a card if it doesn't have a chip.
