Discounts Product Team Q&A: Ask us anything about Discounts!

On October 27th, 2021, our Discounts product team hosted a Q&A focused on sellers who use Point of Sale, Square for Retail, Square for Restaurants, Appointments, and Invoices.

We're aware that many sellers have questions and requests related to setting up discounts within the mobile app as well as the online Square Dashboard. We appreciated learning about what's going well and where there is room for improvement. We can't share out specific details on our product roadmaps, though we will certainly make sure all of the posts that came through on this thread are incorporated into the decision process. 

A few example questions:

• What's the best way to set up a discount for a limited time sale?
• What's the best way to manage my discounts if I have multiple product bundle offerings?
• I need a discount that does "______" — what is your best suggestion?
• I wish I had "______" reporting for my discounts.

PLEASE get the discounts working for Square Online as well for Websites. Because this basic function isn't available through square I'm having to redo my website completely from scratch with another provider and move my business there.

Is it possible to discount one category but not the other?  We would like our employees to have discounts on food items but not beverages. Thank you!

It depends how your items are set up.  You can charge an item and then select DISCOUNTS and apply a discount for X of where X is a dollar amount or percentage off.  This would be applied by whoever checks the person out.  

You can also set up this type of discount that would require a PIN to activate the Discount.

The last type is an automatic discount which would apply to anyone that buys that item.

Automatic discounts can be applied directly to an Item or to a Category.  You could create an Item called Employee Drink and set the price or an automatic discount to the Item called Employee Drink.

I actually have set up discounts that when a person buys 12 they get one free of items in a category and another where if they buy 1 its $14.99 each... buy 2 they are $12.00 each and 3 for $11.00 each in a separate category of items.

That works with retail register, but not with the online website.  REALLY need to synch the two!

Thank you but we were wondering more about applying to certain categories rather than discounts in general.

I would like to set up a gift card system we would sell these gift cards our patrons would use them to purchase services from us, but the system would keep track of purchases and remaining balance for further use how do we do this?

Yes you can setup Gift cards that keeps track of the balance on the cards with Square.  The information about them is here: gift-cards

I hope this Q&A is still open, I run a winery and need to have some auto discounts that require 2 prerequisites (being a specific customer group and a specific item category) there was a workaround using the dashboard and iPad app where you created the discount in the dashboard for a specific customer group first then in the app you could change the rule for specific item categories. this seems to no longer be the case and unfortunately, all of my auto discounts are all broken. is there a new workaround or way to accomplish this? I desperately need this function! thank you in advance.

Will there ever be a way to attach barcodes for specific discounts?

I'm looking for the ability to choose which discounts can be stacked with other discounts.  Most of the time I don't want the ability for two discounts to be applied to the same purchase.  For example, a staff member can currently manually apply a staff discount and at the same time an automatic discount for a certain quantity purchase can be applied to the purchase.  I should be able to choose which discounts can be "stacked.
