On October 27th, 2021, our Discounts product team hosted a Q&A focused on sellers who use Point of Sale, Square for Retail, Square for Restaurants, Appointments, and Invoices.
We're aware that many sellers have questions and requests related to setting up discounts within the mobile app as well as the online Square Dashboard. We appreciated learning about what's going well and where there is room for improvement. We can't share out specific details on our product roadmaps, though we will certainly make sure all of the posts that came through on this thread are incorporated into the decision process.
A few example questions:
- What's the best way to set up a discount for a limited time sale?
- What's the best way to manage my discounts if I have multiple product bundle offerings?
- I need a discount that does "______" — what is your best suggestion?
- I wish I had "______" reporting for my discounts.

Hello Everyone,
Thanks again for taking the time to share your questions and feedback!
We hope some of your questions were answered—the experiences you've shared will help us as we continue to iterate based on your feedback.
We wanted to do a recap on the themes that came up frequently:
- Top asks that have got our attention and we hope we can address soon - Exempt Items or Categories from a discount, Square Online Discounts do not yet sync with the Square Discounts in Items Library, restrict Stacking of discounts
- Auto Discounts - Many of the use cases shared could benefit from auto discounting. Square offers a strong suite of auto discounting features around Item/Category discounts, Quantity based Discounts, Customer based discounts. We would love to hear more from you if there are any gaps in the auto discounting flow that we can solve for. Please send a Private Message to @divyar if you would like to talk further.
Here are a few important links that you may find useful. How to create Discounts video, Discounts FAQ, Create and Manage Discounts
We appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences and we'll continue to improve Square’s products based on your business needs.
Again, thanks for your participation. For the latest updates, keep watch for announcements of new features in Product Updates.

Hi @JUYBoutique20,
Thank you for the feedback. We have this feature on our radar. Do you think a discount capped at a max amount that applies to a specific item could be helpful here?

Not a question, but I would love to see discounts in the customer profile and/or in the check out screen on appointments without having to search for the specific customer to apply.

Hi @juliaskwarlo,
Curious if you are using customer based auto discounts or trying to apply this discount manually. If you try the auto discounts route, the discount would auto apply as soon as you add the customer to the cart. Read more about customer group discounts.

We really need to have a toggle switch or option to allow only 1 discount to be applied per item, ESPECIALLY now that we are using Loyalty. Otherwise, discounts stack and it dramatically cuts into our bottom line (and from Square's perspective will reduce your fee/profit).
Us manually managing this, especially with employees, is not feasible when Loyalty is involved. Customers can be offered a coupon after payment is applied via Loyalty and to backtrack to remove a discount would be so negative to our customer.

Hi @SweetRepeat,
Same discount can only be applied once to the cart. But it is possible to apply two different types of discounts to the cart. This feature request is on our radar. Thank you for sharing the feedback.

Hi @MamiesToffee,
From the customers module, you should be able to find the Instant group for your Repeat customers. You can create a customer group auto discount for this group. Here are the steps on how to create customer group discounts from Dashboard and POS iOS App.
Thanks!

My question is is related to discounts in that now that square offers Cash app for customers to pay for services. Do we still get a referral Bonus when a new user signs up for a cash app account. I have in the past offered a discount on job because of the referral bonus on cash app so it would be a win win for both me and the customer. As well using the cash app now through the square terminal would be a great way to expand cash app user base with my customers.
Thank you
Mike

I am planning on having a sale on the 30th, I have a couple categories that I would like to offer discounts just on those items. Is there an easy way to do that or do I have to catch them only at check out for each individual item?

From a desk top computer you should be able to go to Items-Discounts - Create or edit a current discount.
In the Discount setting you can apply a discount to an entire Category or Item automatically. You can also choose multiple categories or items for the discount.
Edit or Create Discount then choose Discount Rules - Edit purchase rule- select add Items or Category... you can also here add multiple items or Categories.

This doesn't help me because then the rule is applied at all times to that category or item (say drinks), while what I want is to manually insert the discount (say, school) when a specific set of clients comes in (say, from the school) and for the discount to apply to the category in the rule (say drinks) only at this time. I don't think this solves it. Thanks though.

Hi @cafelovi,
To assign a specific set of clients, you can create a customer group auto discount for this group. Here are the steps on how to create customer group discounts from Dashboard and POS iOS App.
To only apply discounts that apply to selected items and categories in a limited time, you can set it up from the Square Dashboard. Learn more on how to create a limited time auto discount.
Currently we don't support limited time customer group discount yet, but we're working on it!
Thanks!

Hi
I wonder if cafelovi is trying to do the same thing that I am. We have a line of people to purchase admission. Some of those people are going to receive a dsicount and some are not. We can't toggle settings on the discount while people are in line. Perhaps we could create an item with a negative price?
Thank you for your time, we love Square either way!

This is a very important topic. We really need the ability to sync discounts from our website to our Square register. It takes a lot of extra time to check out customers on the register because I have to add each discount individually one item at a time.

Also it is impossible to see which coupon codes were effective because we can’t track in store purchases.

I wish there was a negative item specific modifier instead of just discounts. It would be useful for multiple items where you need to apply discounts. e.g. say you have an option for byo cup. you have to have multiple discounts setup for 1 cup, 2 cups, 3 cups etc instead of just an item modifier that says "byo cup" and then apply to each coffee order.

There could be a few work arounds for your use case. You can also set up this rule using our item or quantity based auto discounts. You might have to set up a different item name as ‘bring-your-own-cup’ coffee. Alternatively, you can create a few manual discounts 1cup $1off, 2cup $2off and apply manually at the time of checkout. Another work around is variable discount amount which will allow you to enter the discount amount during checkout.
Learn more about how to set up quantity discounts.
Thanks!
