Best way to collect Customer Emails on Square Register?

The title of this thread has been edited by a Square Moderator from the original: "Collect Emails, Legal Compliant"

Hi. I just got a Square Register for some upcoming Trade Shows. I was wondering what is the smartest way to collect Email addresses and to be legally compliant. If I'm at the checkout and show the customer the option to add his customer data, that is probably the best way? Or what options do I have. Is it possible to build an App that loads up before the checkout starts?

Thank You, Thomas.

Hi. Thank You. Could it be, that it's a little different on the Register then on the iPad version? I can show the Customer a form on that little screen but as I can see I can not edit the fields there, is that possible? Cheers, Thomas.

@niederberger does this help in terms of finding out how to edit the fields? https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/5860-creating-custom-fields-in-your-customer-directory

@niederberger ;

Since I have Square Stands at my store, we use the Ipad versions and have no idea how the form looks or acts on a Register with the customer facing display.  I just know on the Ipad version I tap the add Customer text, which pops up another screen to search for a Current customer or there is a '+' button to get the fields for a customer or employee to enter.  We would have to swing the Stand around for the customer to see it and type in their information.

Now after watching @maxpete video on How to collect email addresses I like his version better for the Hosted version.  Once you have the URL of where it is Hosted you could create a QR code to that url and keep it by your register or on business cards etc.

Since you ask about a form before checkout, I have a Google Form.   Then at the Trade show you have a QR code that can take customers to the Form to fill out and sign up at anytime.

Here are the steps:

  1. Create a Form in Google Sheets
  2. After Form is created copy the URL of the form
  3. Use a Free QR generator like QRmonkey
  4. Paste the Copied URL into the QR generator
  5. Generate and save the QR code
  6. Test the QR code
  7. Print one or more out for the Trade show

Then after the Trade show you should have a Google sheet that has all the answers from the Form listed in the csv sheet.

If you name these column similar to the ones in Customers CSV from Square, upload the customers information to Square.

While creating the Form Questions you can have the answers Required or Optional.  Like Date of Birth.... some people my not like that because its too much information, but can be useful to send out Birthday discounts or coupons.
