What methods do you use to stay motivated?

I've been in business for myself for almost 4 years now. Over the last year I finally went full time with it. I've mostly met my goals without issue. However, I am interested in finding out what others do to keep themselves going?

 

Especially right now as I am currently grieving the loss of 2 people in my life, it's definitely a little harder to keep my focus.

 

Also being around family, I have a tendency to space out or allow them to take my attention away from things that I need to get done.

Thanks for the tag @maxpete.  I'm so sorry for your loss @CassieLMT, that has to be super tough.

 

I think my best advice would be to sit your family members down and set some boundaries for yourself - to show them that you need space and you need to continue to move forward with life, not space to keep them out, even though you effectively will be.  If you tell them that you're doing this for yourself and describe how you need that space, it will be less painful for them to hear than to tell them, hey... go away, I need my space, so to speak.  Be honest that you are grieving and that you need to stick to a routine to help you get passed it.

 

The next thing I would do is set yourself a schedule of time blocks and keep it simple and small.  Don't overwhelm yourself right now.  You need to do the bare minimum and add to it as much as you can handle.  You cannot eat an elephant all in one bite.  Make a plan to do XYZ during the hours of 8-10 or whatever and then only do those things until they are done.  Then if you have extra time and you feel good, add something extra until you have to shift to your next scheduled time.  I think that micromanaging your schedule at this point will make it feel far less overwhelming and help you keep up.

 

Lastly, if your family is overdemanding of your time and attention and not respectful of your needs, do not feel obligated to answer every phone call or text message immediately and don't hesitate to say flat out no when needed.  You don't need to be at every family function or situation if it does not directly involve you or sacrifices your mental well being.  I know that may sound harsh but unless you lost a spouse and have children to support during their loss, your well being is more important than anyone else's at the moment.

 

As far as going forward, staying motivated can often be hard.  I've been self-employed since 1987 and it isn't always easy.  I do a lot of little things to help me keep moving, especially working from home.  I'm a list maker, so I prioritize tasks that need to get done.  I also use a datebook for a schedule.  On days when I have appointments and have to go to town, I determine ahead of time when I need to be ready to leave, get all of my things ready that have to go with me and pick out my outfits so I'm not lost in the closet trying to decide what to wear.  Throughout the day, as things come up that I need to handle, if I'm away from the office, I call myself and leave voicemails that I have to check when I get back.  It forces me to take an action step.  I also find that being very organized and a planner, helps me to stay on task and get things done.  If your to-do list only has five things on it and you get them all done that day, you have a great sense of accomplishment that helps retrain your brain.  If it has 20 things on it and you only do five, then your brain says you've failed.  Keep your tasks manageable for each day and when you can't get it all done in one day, make a new list for tomorrow at the end of the day and know where you're going to start.

 

Not sure what your line of work is or whether or not you have any help in your business, but it may be super beneficial to read the E-Myth book.  We read it in book club a couple months ago and now we're on the Mountain is You and it is amazing the things you will learn!  I've been around the block just a few times (lol) and have already learned stuff I didn't know.

 

Ultimately, you have to do what works for you, in your style, in your space, with your business.  Does color coding help you get things done or a big white board with a calendar or a check list?  If your workspace is not already set up to help you succeed, that's a great place to start.  When you FEEL ready to work, you feel motivated to get work done.

I am very sorry you are going through the process of grieving. I have had a similar experience in my own business development and for me applying self-care with discipline has helped immensely. Pacing yourself as well. I am a reiki teaching master and holistic medium, and taking my own advice/medicine has been a huge part of creating success that has been a slow and steady journey of joyful exchange.

G'Day CassieLMT, Grieving is hard. I've just lost a friend of 33 years (he was 86) in the last few years. We drove 2000km to be with him the last week of his life in a palliative care hospice, then two weeks helping the wife through and past the funeral, then the 2000km home again. Two of my younger brothers both went through palliative care dying from bowel cancer. Life is important - more so than business.

To keep myself focused in my accounting, family succession advice business, I used the thought processes of providing good care to my clients - probably to my financial disadvantage - but it gave me a feeling of being a carer rather than a money hungry business. Provide good care and advice, and ask those clients - have you got friends who would use my services, would you refer them to me please. You really only want to work with the "nicest" clients. Suggest to ones you don't feel comfortable with, that they might like businesses x, y or z. And increase your charges to those less than nice clients, to help them move away. Basically look after yourself.

1st,Great question and congrats on going full time with your business. What keeps me going is โ€œshowing up everydayโ€for my clients/customers. That could mean physically or delivering awesome content, customer service, etcโ€ฆI always over deliverโ€ฆ

2nd I become obsessed with solving the problems of my customer,I probably think about it more than they do. When you get to a point when you become so good at solving their problems, they come running with credit cards in hand. Being a problem solver is what keeps me motivated. Hope that helps.

Im so sorry for your recent losses. It's important to know that it's ok to grieve. We go through seasons in life. Take Time to heal. 

 

Motivation never lasts. Motivation gives us spurts of energy. It's important to create habits, have automations in place and use social media scheduling platforms.

Hi! I am so sorry to hear about your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

 

I find there are a lot of distractions - we are not just business owners but daughters, mothers, friends, managers, etc. I have incorporated a tactic called Intermittent Fasting - business owner edition ๐Ÿ˜‰

 

This means that between the hours of 10 and 6 I only work on business, workout, go grocery shopping, and other tasks to take care of myself and work. Before 10am and after 6pm is where I give my time to my family, friends, and relationships. This process has helped me build a lot of self respect and discipline at work. 

 

You can't pour from an empty cup; it is great you are noticing areas of your life where you are losing your motivation. That is the first step in taking decisive action against it.
