Feature Request: Separating Suggested Gratuity

The title of this thread has been edited by a Square Moderator from the original: Separating Suggested gratuity

Wondering if there’s a way to separate services and product to align the suggested gratuity amounts to reflect service amount only?
right now, we enter the total amount into our terminal and gratuity percentages  are based on that. Is there a way to change this?

Wondering about this also! My clients get frustrated with it, understandably!

You could run the service separately from the product. That's what I do.

Unfortunately then you are paying the credit card fee twice

You can write off the fees at the end of the year

Tell your client how much the service is and have a calculator on your station for them to use. But I agree that Square should have figured this simple issue out, already!

That’s what I’ve been doing recently too, but when I’m in a hurry it’s that much more extra time and another step to walk through. That might sound dumb, but it definitely gets annoying telling so many clients in a day 😅

I’ve been using Square for over four years and have yet to find a work around for this issue. One of the main reasons I love Square is because I CAN process service and retail in one transaction! So bizarre to me that there isn’t a way to exclude retail items from gratuity calculations when entering them into the system. I have simply developed a “script” that I repeat and remind clients of the service total and to hit custom if they are choosing to leave gratuity as I spin the stand around. It can make for a few awkward moments but less awkward (IMO) than explaining that they over tipped me and refunding the calculated difference. I hope Square gets on this soon. It’s an issue that has lead to me research other POS systems.

I agree that this would be a great addition. I currently just explain to my customers that it doesn’t not remove the retail items from the tip amount, so that they can adjust accordingly. The other booking programs I’ve used all have this already built in.

I have worked with other POS and none of them separate the product out from the tip.. I have always just told the client what the services come out to and let them figure it out from there. I have never had complaints.

My clients get a little frustrated with this problem. It also forces an awkward conversation. When leiple

are waiting in line it takes too much time to break down the total and then do the math on a tip. Not exactly efficient.

I agree, it should never be calculated on the total sale just on the service only. I have the same problem.

Hi there @TrademarkWI and others in this thread. Thanks for reaching out to us here on the Square Seller Community with your suggestions👋

Right now, we don't have a way to exclude certain items in the checkout from gratuity. I think there are some great workaround suggestions here from Sellers who have needed to do this at their business as well. I do understand that having this as an available feature would be a positive impact on your business and workflow.

I’ve shared your feature request with our Product Team, as they are constantly improving our products based on feedback like this. To learn more about how feature requests work, please see this post from one of our Seller Community Moderators.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for any updates, here, in our Seller Community. We appreciate your input!
