Tell us about your business.
Since 1961, vankalkerfarms.com, technically the business goes back 1 more generation but the retail and wholesale business we run today we say starts at my dad's start of a farm stand off the main property.
What changes, if any, have you made to your business adapt to COVID-19 restrictions?
We added an online store thru square, we added curbside pickup.
What’s the best business advice you’ve received?
Charge what you have to charge to make a living.
When did you start using Square?
We started in 2011 and 2012 we used Square a bit and fully switched over in 2013. We loved the simple ‘one price to rule them all’ approach. Credit card processing is/was a sleazy salesman, crooked, and confusing way to take money but it was a necessary evil. Square changed all that.
What do you know now that you wish you would have known on day 1 of starting your business?
Pricing isn't the main factor in the success in your business. you don't have to race to the bottom. You can make a good margin and still be wildly successful if you have a good product and surround that product with a good shopping experience and put your family owned touch front and center.
What questions can you help with in the Community? What's your favorite discussion topic?
General Square setup, taxes, items, etc. we only use Square Online limitedly so I know some but not a lot in that area.
What is your favorite Square tool/feature?
Simplicity. Square POS is simple and needs to remain simple for the employee facing part. Basically anyone can use Square in a matter of minutes as it is all intuitive.
What is your top feature request?
Debit card processing to save money. This is an area Square is able to help Square users save by running Debit cards truly as debit cards and not as credit cards. Square Canada does this and the savings are great.
