How to Add a Watermark/Overlay to a Photo

I'm putting this here in hopes that it may help someone.  I searched high and low for an easy way to do this, and the easiest (and least expensive) way I have found is by using PicMonkey.

To make an overlay on a transparent background:

1. Go to PicMonkey.
2. At the top of the home page, click the "design" button.
3. The "Basic Edits" section opens and if it doesn't automatically open the option for "Canvas Color," click on that.
4. There is a color chart you can choose from OR just under the slider is a box and beside it "Transparent canvas."  Click on the box so you have a transparent canvas, then click the green 'apply' box.
5. You will see a light gray and white checkered background, but it WILL be transparent.
6. On the left side, click on the box for text.  Choose your text, font, color, etc.  
7. When finished, click on "Save" in the gray bar above the box to save this to your computer.

To add an overlay to a photo:  

1. Go to the PicMonkey home page and click on "edit".
2. Choose the photo you want to add the overlay to.
3. In the left column, there is a butterfly icon for the overlays.  Click on the butterfly.
4. At the top of that column is the option to use your own.  Click on that option.
5. Choose the overlay you made (or have saved) and it will pop onto the photo, allowing you to resize it and move it around.
6. When finished, click "Save" in the gray bar above your photo and save the finished product to your computer.

There are also sites like http://www.umarkonline.com/ that offer a free, easy way to add a watermark.

I personally frequently use https://pixlr.com/ for editing images.  While Pixlr is far more robust than what you might need for adding a watermark, it's a pretty powerful free online image editor with functionality similar to Photoshop.  If you open an image in it, and then add some text, it automatically creates a new layer on top of the image for the text, and there are effects and opacity settings you can adjust on each layer.  Then you can save that to your local drive as a new image and upload it to your Weebly site.

@PeteyD  I've used umark before but didn't like that I had to recreate the mark again for each use.  I use pixlr all the time on my phone and notebook, but didn't think about using it on the pc.  Lol!  I may give that a try!  Thanks!

Here I also have one good suggestion about to add text/logo (watermark) to the photo. I personally for a long time use Auto Stamper for adding signature stamp on images.  While Auto Stamper is far more robust than what you might need for adding a watermark, it's a pretty powerful free online image editor with different useful functionality. You can create own watermark stamp and then capture photos with a smartphone camera then signature automatically added on your image.

One other option if you're looking for a program on your computer to do this is GIMP.  It's totally free, and available for OS X, Windows, and Linux:

It's pretty powerful and is a good alternative to Photoshop (for those that are familiar with it).

Despite it's rather silly acronym, it's easy to forget about it unless you use it a lot.
