Are digital downloads that customers purchase from the site auto-sent?

I have several digital download files for sale on my site that are patterns for crochet and knit. I do not understand the process once a customer buys the digital download. Is the file automatically sent to them? If not, how do I go about doing that? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
