How do I specify an image for sharing on social media?

[Note: The title of this post has been edited by a moderator.]

How can I change website thumbnail? It is defaulting to a certain photo on my site but I want to select a more specific photo/logo that represents our brand and makes a better first impression when sending the link to potential clients. I googled how to do it and found some code that includes the url for the photo that I want to use and placing that in the page header but didn't work for me.

WIth the classic Weebly drag and drop editor, you can specify a specific image by using a meta tag. Use this URL of an image file with the meta tag like this:

<meta property="og:image" content="https://www.google.com/someimage.jpg" />

Simply replace everything within the double quotes after content= with the URL of your own image, then add it the Header Code field in Settings > SEO in the website editor. You can also do this on a per-page basis by going to the Pages tab, clicking on a page, then adding it to the Header Code field found in SEO Settings. If you haven't already added the image to your site somewhere, you can also add it to a hidden page and then right-click on the image on the hidden page to copy the URL.

For sites built using the Square Online editor, you can do this for every page of your site within the website editor. Navigate to the page, then click on the gear icon on the left and choose Page settings. Go to the Social tab on the popup, then add an image to the Social image option. You can also set one for the whole site by going to Website > SEO & Social Media, click on Update social media, then adding an image on the Social tab of the popup.

Regardless of which editor you have, don't forget to publish afterward. You may also want to use the Facebook debugger to scrape your site again, since Facebook may use older cached images without doing that.

I'll resend it to you. Sometimes there is a delay with Facebook updating, but it looks like everything is setup properly. Did you publish after adding the meta tags?

It's working!!!
Yes I saved the changes and then published the page. Looks like it just took an hour or so to update, maybe I need to work on being patient lol

I was checking it with https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/sharing/?q=njkiernan.com%2Fopportunity
and www.metatags.io to write the code

Still nothing through on the email though

Woohoo! So glad to hear it's working for you. I'm resending the ticket right now as I needed to confirm with tech support what your options were. It looks like they can update you to a newer dashboard! It will be quite a drastic change, but well worth it IMO. Smiley Happy Smiley Happy

Hi there! I tried using your code. It's awesome. Except! On my actual website it added a horizontal black bar at the top. On every page. Something inside the header code I'm assuming? This is the code I'm using. Any help appreciated!

I'm not familiar with the additional details in your code, @matthewc and I don't see any reason why it would add the bar.. Have you tried adding the code to SEO>Settings>Header instead of the individual page?

Oh, perfect! You're two steps ahead of me. Smiley Happy Copy/paste this code into Settings>SEO>Header. Then save and publish. After you publish, you can update Facebook by scraping the url in the Facebook Debugger tool. Let me know if you have any questions.

<meta property="og:image" content="https://www.cwwpp.org/uploads/7/6/9/3/76935169/resize-1585906177778735663cwwpplogo_orig.jpg" />

Thanks, it works. However, scraper says: "The following required properties are missing: og:type, fb:app_id" Should I worry about that?

I wouldn't worry about those, @cwwppvuk; they won't affect the image showing with your post.

I need some help as well please. I am trying to create logo for my thumbnail so when i post it anywhere i will have an image to display with my link. i have read through several of these threads and am now confused. I have copied the meta tag info my header portion of the SEO page, but running the facebook debugger i still dont see an image. the part i am confused about it the image address itself.

Do i create a hidden page and use the image address from the image i upload there?
Do i use an image i already have from my home page and get the image address that way and input it into the meta tag?

please help

website: www.illustriousfinancialsolutions.com
and i want my logo to show for my preview thumbnail

Thanks for posting, @Fancy323.

Since your site is hosted using a third party host I can't log in to see what you've added. Can you contact your current host so they can take a look?

I am having trouble with this and the Weebly support tech just gave up. Site is www.cindylove.life and the header code I am using is:

<meta property="og:image" content="https://cindylove.life/uploads/b/137672369/background-images/1817676682.jpg” />

Also, when I debug on FB I get an error "<link id= was not a valid URL."

Thanks for reaching out, @cindysnowlove Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your thumbnail.

Is the image you wish to use the one on the page titled "test"? Do we have permission to publish the site if needed.

why is this not working...

you would think weebly would just add this option to the builder? Am I not getting the url for my photo correct?

Sure thing, @nuntuket What is the name of the site and is the logo added to your site with an Image element, or is it just located in the logo area of the site?
