It would be nice to have "virtual" as an item type for things that do not get shipped. For example, I take deposits for long lead items. If I select "physical" as the item type, it will say "free shipping" in the cart which will be confusing later when I ask for the balance with shipping..

Yes, that works. However, I can not "change" the item type (it keeps telling me to try again) so I had to make a new item. It would be nice to be able to "change" the item type.
Still, my biggest problem is not being able to take a deposit and then apply it to the final purchase. Taking a deposit as one item and then the balance as another creates all kinds of problems such as not being able to make accurate commercial invoices for customs. I realize this woul be a complicated feature, but it seems like one that a lot of people would find useful.

I can see how that would be complicated. Do you use Square as your checkout provider? You could use a service item to take a deposit, then use Square Invoices to collect the remainder. With Square Invoices you can add a payment to the invoice and choose the "option" option, that way the invoice also reflects what they already paid.

Actually using "sevvice" as item type is a problem because it does not take the customers address, which is something I need. Any work around for this?

I can't think of a better workaround right now, though maybe someone else in the Community has some ideas. Are you taking the rest of the payment through your website, or is it only the deposit?
