how to enter credit card numbers manually

Hello,  I'm new to credit card readers and I bought it so I could take orders over the phone.  I cant find any information on how to enter credit card numbers manually for payment.   can someone help me figure this out or send me a link to where i can get instructions?  thanks in advance
