Manually Entering Gift Card in Virtual Terminal

Has Square eliminated the manual entering of gift card numbers in the Virtual Terminal? This was working fine on my system as of a couple days ago ... and now suddenly not even an option.

Hello @BradJohnson75,

Thank you for posting in the Seller Community. Welcome.

This is interesting, do you have a mix of plastic and eGift Cards in your store? Also, what internet browser are you using?

Please let me know by replying in this thread. I'll keep an eye out for your response.

Just eCards. Our store is not open for walk-up business right now, due to COVID restraints, so we had been redeeming these via the 16-digit code. Was working fine and wonderfully up to yesterday. And then when I attempted to do so via the Virtual Terminal, the option was removed.

When I'm at the shop it's fine. I can just fire up the app on my phone. But I'd like to not always have to be there to do so -- esp. given the number of e-gift cards we sold during our shelter-in-place closure.

I've gone to the Virtual Terminal via Chrome (my default), as well as Firefox & Safari. To no avail. I spoke to Square customer support, and they logged into my Dashboard and basically confirmed what I was seeing -- but could offer no explanation why the option was there one day and not the other.

Hi @BradJohnson75,

I went ahead and ran a few tests on my own account, and I was able to get the virtual terminal to process the egift card. Try entering the following information for the requested fields shown in the attached photo.

  • Enter the full gift card number for the "card number" section.
  • Enter any future date for the expiration date.
  • Enter three "0's" for the CVV/CVV2 slot.
  • Enter five "0's" for the billing zip code.

It should process as normal, and it will reflect in your transactions and Gift Card section of your dashboard. This definitely does not appear to be an intended workflow, so I will doubleback and check in with our teams to see if there is an easier way to do it.

This could be helpful -- thanks so much. When I went back to the Virtual Platform, the option to enter the Gift Card number had returned. So, maybe some sort of momentary glitch?

I'll give your trick a try if it ever comes to that again.
