Hi, when I attempt to use Tap to pay on my iPhone it keeps giving an error “failed to connect to square”. We encountered an error when connecting to Tap to pay. I’ve checked my settings on my phone, restarted my phone, updated iOS nothing has changed.

Sounds like you have tried several things - there's some additional info here however, you may end up having to contact Square's Tech or Customer Support for additional assistance. Some others have experienced similar issues as you can from this previous post however, many people have not had any issues. From experience, we like the Contactless Chip and Chip Reader - it's a small investment, connects via Blootooth and does have to be recharged before use but, is very reliable.
have you tried a different tap to pay reader?
