Chip reader stopped pairing with Samsung Chromebook

Got a brand new Samsung Chromebook, and a brand new chip reader. Got the Square app, followed the instructions, and it paired just fine. Went on vacation for a week, then came back, and suddenly, the chip reader won't pair. I've followed all of the available troubleshooting steps. Shut down chromebook, uninstalled and reinstalled Square app, hard reset of the chip reader, etc...

I've literally spent hours just repeating the steps. Square app sees the reader, tries to pair it, fails, tells me to hold down the button on the reader until the red lights flash, tries to pair it, fails, etc...

I tried to pair the same reader with my phone and had no problem.

Turn bluetooth on the chromebook off and on. No luck. Chip reader is fully charged.

The only thing that I can think is maybe happening is that when it starts trying to pair, a system box pops up on the chromebook saying that Chromebook is trying to connect to the bluetooth device, so maybe the chromebook's internal system is trying to pair and interfering with Square's attempts to do so?

It just makes no sense because the Chromebook had no trouble the first time, and my phone is still able to pair with no trouble, so it doesn't seem like there's an issue with the chip reader.

Any ideas?

Hey @WoolWorth! Welcome to the Community!

So our Contactless + Chip reader is actually not compatible with a Chromebook. When a device isn't tested/approved, there's no guarantee it will work with the reader.

You can check our list of Compatible Devices here to see what devices you can pair with it successfully.

Are there plans on making Chip Readers compatible with Chromebooks?

@Sumner_Israel None that we know of at the moment.

I'll be sure to update this thread if they do become compatible and I'll tag you as well!

Add me to the request that Chromebooks be supported.  As of now I do not use one but have been seriously contemplating one and one thing that would push it is Square reader compatibility.   I seriously think Square would benefit adding more support to more devices.

For me, having a real keyboard would let me give more detailed receipts at purchase as well as stop me from going to the PC to type up invoices all the time.

I'll make sure you're added @cmusicshop!

Totally understand with the keyboard aspect too. I definitely prefer a keyboard over a small touch screen from a phone/iPad if you're typing up stuff like that.

@ashc

I have seen other requests on other threads for this very thing.  There does seem to be a need.  I have an ASUS Chromebook Tablet!!  Yep, a tablet running Chrome.  Sure would be nice to accept chip payments.

Thanks,

Anthony Sellers
