Beware: Cash App uses Square sites for free advertising - how we got it removed from our site

[We're reposting because a Square staff member merged our original post into another long thread. Wonder why they don't want users to see this?]

Heads up that the Cash App was added to our site without our permission and without notice. What's more, be warned that even if you turn off the Cash App payment option in your settings, it will still appear on your site and item pages regardless. Right next to the quantity buttons is a multicolor ad for Cash App that opens a pop up, and it's on every product page...and it stays there even after we togged off the Cash App option in our settings. How is it acceptable for Square to use its customers' sites to get free advertising for Cash App even when we opt out of using it?! The only way to get these Cash App ads removed from our product pages is to chat with Square support...who have to fill out a form and then it takes 48 hours.

Pretty sneaky of Cash App & Square: adding it to customers' sites, providing an option to disable it (that doesn't actually work), and using customers' sites to get free advertising for Cash App. Definitely makes us wonder what they'll do to our site next without notifying us.

@gtm, I do not see that to be the case.  I turned off Square Cash in the settings of the online store.  refreshed my cart page and the option was gone.  only apple pay and google pay remained.  I turned it back on in settings and refreshed the page and it was back to use Square Cash.

Sounds like you're just talking about payment methods accepted. The ads for Cash App (aka Square Cash) remain on each of our product pages--big square with a pop up option right below the quantity selector--even after we turned off Cash App (aka Square Cash) as an accepted payment method, as you describe in your post.

The only way to get the ads for Cash App (aka Square Cash) is to ask Square Support to fill out a form on our behalf and then wait 48 hours...which we discovered by accident while chatting with support, after the ads and the payment method were added to our site without notice and without permission.

@gtm I have no idea what ad or multicolor ad for cash app you are talking about.  there is nothing on any product page or qty selector on any page.  the only place it appears is on the checkout page.

I can't find anything on either of my store pages, unless somehow I'm missing it, and I have pay with cash app turned on.  it is just an option on the checkout page.

Have to agree with you - not seeing any ads - didn't see them before turning off Cash App and after turning off Cash App - the option to use it now gone.

@JK_Fiber_Art @VanKalkerFarms Well, guess y'all should feel lucky you don't see them? Screenshots of Square Support confirming there were Cash App ads on each of our product pages even after we turned off Cash App as a payment option in our settings (these images are automatically deleted after 1 month):

After digging deeper with Square Support today, they admitted we were part of a beta testing group, and that Square doesn't ask permission or give warning to whichever customers they put in beta testing groups.

Take it or leave it: we wish there'd been a post about this when it happened to us, so we're sharing our experience. Beware: Square may put ads on your site (or enable new payment options or who knows what else?) without permission or warning.
