I have seen a post from 2020 where someone asked the same question and it wasn't answered on how to do this, only reference the "Help and Manage discounts page" https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/3955-create-and-manage-discounts which is absolutely no help on how to do this.
I have it set up for a 50% off discount - Buy 2 items and get one half off. Section 1 is set to quantity of 2 items from the category. Section 2 is set up for 1 item from the same category to be discounted to 50% off. All items in the category are priced at $8. So the discount should be $4 on item 3, 6, 9, 12.
I select my discount (or do this at the end), select my 3 items. The discount is taking $4 off each item, not just the third item. What am I doing wrong.
So I actually just figured it out. So if someone is seeing this thread they can see how I did it as I've seen this question before and not answered.
Now on my third item it is reflecting the discount!

BUY 1 GET ONE 1/2 HALF OFF (Individual item)
Here's how to do this with an INDIVIDUAL ITEM (not category of items) for anyone wanting to know:
To set up a "Buy 2, Get the Second One for 50% Off" discount on Square, follow these steps:
1. Sign in to Square Dashboard
2. Once logged in, navigate to the "Items & Orders" section, then click on "Items", and finally select "Discounts". This is where you can create and manage all your discount settings.
3. Click on the option to create a new discount. Here, you will enter the details of your discount.
4. Discount Name: Give your discount a clear name, such as "Buy 2, Get 50% Off".
- Amount Type: Choose "Percentage" as the type of discount.
- Discount Amount: Set this to 25%.
- Applicable Locations: Specify where this discount will apply. If you have multiple locations, ensure you select the correct ones.
5. Set Up Automatic Discount Rules
- Toggle on the "Discount rules" within the "Automatic" section.
- Required Quantity: Set this to 2, indicating that the discount applies when a customer buys two items.
- Add Items or Categories: Click on "Add individual items" and/or "Add item categories" to specify which items or categories this discount applies to. Select each item or category you’d like to automatically discount when added to a sale, then click "Done".
6. Save Your Discount
Note: The cashier will still have to select/apply the discount at the end of checkout under 'Add Discount' for this to fully work'. Haven't found a way to automate the discount simply by selecting 2 items then checking out. Perhaps it is a new feature request for Square unless I'm missing something...
