Square POS Updates - Swipe Chip cards

We’ve all heard the complaints about new chip cards taking longer to process than the old magnetic swipe option. Well now, in addition to having the fastest chip card reader on the market, you can also adjust your settings so that you can swipe a chip card using the magnetic stripe. This feature comes in handy during peak business hours, when you need to process sales quickly, as swiped transactions process faster than inserted EMV chip card transactions.

Though this feature will definitely speed up the check-out process, keep in mind that you will be accepting a higher liability as swiping a card does not protect your business against the new liability shift.

Once you’ve decided that you would like to swipe chip cards, the rest is a breeze! Follow the steps below:

  • Visit your in-app Settings by tapping this icon: three horizontal lines
  • Under Checkout Options, tap Swipe Chip Cards and toggle it on.
  • Review the liability warning on the screen and agree to the terms to continue.

  • Use the magstripe reader or connected Square Stand to swipe the chip card.

Keep in mind you can toggle this feature off/on at anytime.

Thanks for reading and we hope this new update will help your business run as efficiently as possible and keep your lines moving! You can keep up with all of our latest releases by subscribing for email updates. Please feel free to start a new thread if you have any feedback for us.

How do you do this if you are using "Square for Restaurants"?

Hey @cbenson - Currently, this setting isn't available within the Square for Restaurants app. However, if you sign into the Point of Sale app and enable swipe chip cards there, it will make it possible to do so in the Restaurants app.

Hope that helps!
