Questions on the CSV Inventory Import Tool

I don't really know if this is the best forum for this question but I'm starting here.  I am a new seller to Square on-line (I've been with Shopify for a couple of years) and I am trying to use the Square import template to get my inventory setup.  I am in the process of transferring my domain name and I just want to be ready to go when that is done so I can publish the site.

I've went through the help center and I have found old articles but nothing that would specifically help me.  I did see a reference to a CSV column description file in the Support Center but was unable to find it.

The Columns I have questions are as follows:

  • SEO Title - Do I actually fill this in or does it come in with information once the domain is transferred?
  • SEO Description - Same question really as above
  • Permalink - Where does this come in?
  • Social Media Link Title/Description (two columns), how do I use these?
  • Sellable/Stockable (two columns)
    • Sellable, I guess, is always going to be Yes for an import?
    • Stockable, what is the column used for?

General Questions:

  • When I setup my Square account it made me setup two locations, I'm not going to use both of them can I hide the columns for the second location?
  • Can I hide columns I'm not going to use in general or is that not advised?

I am computer literate however I've never setup a website, at least not a very complicated one so I have a lot of questions that may sound off the wall but asking them any way.  Not that familiar with HTML so struggling a bit but I want to make this a success.

Thank you in advance for the help!

Jim

Another idea is for fields you are not sure or how to fill them out ask Chatgpt for example.  You may get a few ideas from there on how to fill them out.

I just asked Chatgpt (free) this:

How do I fill in the SEO Title in Square pos for my online site?

This was the answer:

Filling in the SEO Title in Square POS (Point of Sale) for your online store is an essential part of making sure your site is easily discoverable on search engines like Google. Here's how you can fill it in:

Steps to Fill in SEO Title in Square Online:

  1. Log in to your Square Dashboard:

  2. Go to Online Store:

    • From your main dashboard, click on the "Online" option in the left-hand sidebar.
  3. Edit Your Site:

    • If you're already in the Online Store section, click "Website" or "Site" settings to edit your site.
    • If you’re setting up a new online store, you will need to follow the setup process until you reach the site settings section.
  4. Find SEO Settings:

    • Navigate to the "Settings" section within the website builder.
    • Look for an option labeled "SEO" or "SEO Settings" (it could be within "General Settings" or a similar section).
  5. Edit the SEO Title:

    • In the SEO settings, you will see an option for SEO Title.
    • The SEO Title is the title that appears in search engine results for your online store or specific product pages. This should be descriptive, concise, and include relevant keywords for your business.

Example of a good SEO Title for a clothing store:

    • "Custom Apparel | Premium Clothing Store - [Your Store Name]"

Example of a product page SEO title:

    • "Handmade Leather Wallet | Unique Gifts - [Your Store Name]"

Make sure your SEO Title is:

    • Clear and descriptive: Tell visitors what your site or page is about.
    • Includes key terms: Use relevant keywords for your business or products.
    • Around 50-60 characters: This ensures the full title displays in search results without being cut off.
  6. Save Changes:

    • After editing your SEO Title, be sure to save your changes.

Additional Tips:

  • Avoid keyword stuffing: Ensure your SEO title is natural, readable, and focused on your primary message.
  • Use branding: Including your business name in the title can help with brand recognition.
  • Unique titles for each page: Don't use the same SEO Title for every page. Each product, category, or service page should have a unique SEO Title to improve your visibility in search engines.

Once you've updated your SEO Title, it may take a little time for changes to appear on search engines. Be patient, and you can always make adjustments later as needed.

Welcome to the Square Sellers forum as I see you joined today.

I have a site outside of Square so let me start by saying I am not sure what each column in Square for Online is.  Here is my Suggestion, Create an item or 2 in your square dashboard on a computer for your online store.  Fill in as much information as you can.  Save the item(s) then Export your Square Catalog.  This will give you a Template of what the different columns are and how they appear in a csv file.  Now with Square for Retail you have a few columns that Square fills in or populates for you and if they are blank, Square treats them as a New item.  In the csv version you have a Blank Token column for New items, as a Excel xlxs file there are the Token and the Refrence Handle which square creates for New items.  As for your other questions about SEO titles and descriptions I actually have an outside agency that has been helping me with these fields on my website along with the Social Media links etc.

The last thing is I see you posted this in the Square for Retail group, you may have better luck with answers for your website in the Online group in the Forum.

Thank you for the reply, I have created a few items in my square inventory and I did do an export, that is actually where the questions came from (well most of them).  My site is not published yet and I may just wait until it is published as I think most of the information for the SEO stuff will come once it is published.

Since I'm just getting started I don't have a great deal of money to spend on outside consulting but I may bite the bullet and see if I can get some help once I have gotten all the answers I can get on my own.

I appreciate the quick response and will keep plugging along!

Thanks Keith!  That does help a bunch.  I'm going to look at this in the morning.  I still think I'll need to have at least my domain name transferred if not the store published but I'll give it a try.  I appreciate you following up!

Thank you,

Jim
