I operate a specialty toy store and would like to offer customized items to my customers. I would like to have my employees to be able to enter a custom name on the item when sold. Does anyone know of a way to do this in Square for Retail?

Hi @JohnC58. There is no direct way to do this through Square, as far as I can tell. I might have a work-around, clunky as it will seem, though. Before I get to that, I’d definitely recommend that you send a feature request to Square, being very specific about your particular use case for custom items.
I have two work-arounds that might work immediately for you.
The first one involves adding a note to the customized item, with the information your require — name, monogrammed initials, etc. These notes will print on receipts and such, and they are saved in the item details CSV for all items in a transaction.
For the second one, when your employees add an item that needs customization, they can add a Custom Amount (which CAN be zero), then edit that custom amount to change the description of the customization you want. This will print as a separate item below the original item on the receipt, and it will also be saved as a separate item in the item details CSV.
To make this option even quicker, you could create an item in your library (name is, for example, “Item Customization”) with a blank price which your employees could choose from your item grid in Retail. Since the price in the library is blank, employees would be prompted for the price and when they add it they would also have the option to enter the instructions for the customization as a note. That way you could actually track the number of customized items by the number of sales for this new item.
Like I said, clunky. But if I am understanding your end goal here, either of them should work until Square. Even if Square were to accept your feature request, I wouldn’t expect it before the current holiday season.
Let me know if you have questions or need clarification about anything I mentioned above. I wish you well!
