Using hardware bought in the US in the UK

Based in the US, but we are working a convention in Glasgow, and may set up a UK bank account to facilitate deposits.  Question --- do we need to purchase  Square hardware in Scotland and link it to the UK acct, or can we use our already purchased US Square hardware and link it to our UK bank acct?

Hey @FBNBooks - such a simple sounding question, but unfortunately it's gonna be a little complicated!

Your US account won't be able to take any payments in the UK, so you'll need a new/additional Square account to go with that UK bank account too.

Most of Squares hardware is built country specific, so you'd need UK hardware for it to connect to the UK account (not sure if this goes the same for the simple reader - but for the cost of them I'd get a new one).

What hardware are you looking to use? I've been loving the tap to pay on my phone and currently using it for at least 90% of my face to face payments. I think you'll find stuff like contactless and Apple Pay/GooglePay a lot more the norm for everything here too.

Hi @FBNBooks, thanks for posting and welcome to the Community 👋. I wanted to provide additional information here.

As @Sam_400º mentioned above, you can only use a Square hardware in the country it was activated in, and you're also not able to link an international bank account to your Square account.

Additionally, you must be a resident of the UK and provide a local residential address to sign up for a Square UK account. You can find the list of information required to sign up for an account in the UK here. If you're not a UK resident, you won't be able to take payments using Square unfortunately.

I hope this information help, but let me know if you have any questions.
