Are you able to create sub-categories??

Hi, yes. When you add a new category in Online / Items / Site Categories there is an option saying something like  “Do you want this to be a sub category’ and you can choose which existing category to place it in.

While it is possible to create sub-categories for Square Online, this feature isn't yet available on the Square for Retail app. 

 

Our product teams are constantly working on improving our features and products based on requests like this so I'll be sure to share this as a feature request.

Hello @nella, thanks for adding your interest to this thread. 

 

Unfortunately, I still don't have an update on sub-categories being available on Square for Retail. 

 

A potential workaround would be to use Custom Attributes within your items, depending on the set-up you are looking for, but this might end up getting messy if you already have certain variations set up. 

 

I'll be sure to update both threads with any developments I hear on this feature request 👍

Thank you for the suggestion. Is it possible to do sales reporting using item Custom Attributes as a filter? I had a look at https://squareup.com/dashboard/sales/reports/ but I could not see any way of doing this. Maybe I am overlooking something?

 

What I have done as a workaround for the broader issue is split our item categories to effectively make these the sub-categories. This means we have two of everything which will mean we have to do some manual sums when reading sales reports but I hope what we gain outweighs that negative, which is primarily tracking categories in Xero reports (as we use the Amaka integration so all sales are synced with Xero). To make this most effective in our business we need this granularity of sub-categories, so I hope what I have done will achieve this.

Custom attributes do not appear in reporting @nella, unfortunately. 

 

That sounds like a good workaround for the time being and may be useful to other sellers, so thanks for sharing.
