Square for Restaurants Free version - taking signatures for CC but not for DC

For some reason my default settings for signatures keep getting changed (I suppose when they update all the defaults kick back in - very annoying) to no signature.  Today, a customer wanted to tip on a tab that was under $10; however, there was no tip ability on the receipt, nor was there a signature line - even though I have collect signatures chosen. I have accept tips chosen.  How can we keep it consistent so when I'm getting a much needed day off - I can not need to be called to try to fix the situation.  I never could figure out why the under $10 charge would not print a signature or a tip line.  

Also - I understand that some Credit Cards are no longer requiring signatures; however, I am seeing CC with signature lines - but ALL my Debit Cards are no longer getting signatures.  How can we fix this????
