Square Register: can I connect an additional card reader

Frequently, we have a need for bartenders to handle card payments themselves.

scenario: Customer starts a tab, square does not allow pre-authorizations, so we get the name off the card (would require a swipe,) the name is added to the tab, and we hold the card.

Flipping the 2nd screen around or undocking it is impractical, in a fast-paced setting, so a second chip/swipe would work much better. When a customer closes a tab, the prompt for signature and tips then (ideally) guide the guest through the close if they are at an order station, or the staff could close out a tab and deliver slips to sign

You're referring to the  customer display on the graphite Square Register right? If so, a second reader can't be connected to it.

The best solution is to give them a shared login using Team Permissions. That way, they're able to log into their own devices and take mobile payments for the biz.

Or set up another POS at the bar using a supported iPad/tablet and the Contactless Chip reader Enable Open Tickets on each device so tickets sync and are accessible from any device.
