Option to replace "no tip" button with "custom tip" like other POS systems.

We saw a decrease of more than 5% in tips after switching to square. Can you make it possible to replace the no tip button with just a "custom tip" button where the user can enter in 0.00?

"no tip" is also pre-selected which suggests that's the norm. It would be helpful to have the middle tip be the pre-selected amount.

Keep in mind though, that the best place to post and support features requests would be on the Ideate board mentioned above by Chip. While our product teams do keep an eye on the product discussion boards, it would be the Feature boards that they regularly review in terms of product development.

Also, in case you're interested... I see another thread here where some Sellers have discussed their experience when changing how they present the tip options to their customers.

Hi @dfxx.  You can make feature requests to the Square POS team on this Ideate Board.  The team will review it and decide if it is something they want to add to the product roadmap.  But even if they do, it will not be a quick change.

Having said that, you are not alone in your observation that tips are decreasing.  It might be the “no tip” option, but it might just as easily be a timing coincidence.  Because everyone is asking for tips, even businesses that aren’t normally considered places that we tip, people (including me) are just weary of tips.  At my shop, I have noticed a decrease over last year’s tips and I have been using Square for 11 years now, so it is definitely not because of a new POS in my shop.

Oh, and “Custom Tip” already exists, I think just above “No Tip.”

I’d imagine that if Square decided to implement your suggestion, it would be done as an option for sellers to use or not.  Speaking for myself, I love having the no tip button there and prominent.  I want people to know that tipping is optional and that not tipping is as easy as hitting a button.  Don’t get me wrong — I understand where you are coming from.  But your possible solution to decreasing tips won’t be something every seller will want.  Still, definitely submit your request through the appropriate channel at the link above.  It can never hurt to ask!

Best wishes,

Chip

It's funny because I was in hospitality and at one point a restaurant added a no tip button to the mobile checkout. Half of us quit after the first week because they refused to listen to our concerns. Keep in mind we were all veterans and it was a tip based restaurant, so to have a no tip option so prominently was insulting and lead to us losing money. The restaurant still has retention issues two years later because of having No tip be one of the "options"  amongst other reasons.

On behalf of restaurant workers that rely on tips I hope Square eliminates no tip and puts a custom tip amount, and I'm even in favor of revamping hospitality to eliminate tipping for a myriad of reasons.

Bump. Like others have said, our restaurant is seeing a lot of customers not leaving tips. Please replace "No Tip" with "Custom Amount".
